Nox stiffens for the briefest moment. Crimson heat rushes to his ears, blooming fast before his face follows a second later, betraying him completely.
"…You're welcome," he manages.
Chase’s grin only brightens as he flashes him those annoyingly pretty white teeth. "You're such a gentleman."
Nox blinks at him.
Gentleman.
The word rings between his ears, ricocheting around his head like a ping pong ball.
He has never, ever in his life thought of himself as a gentleman.

After three long, tedious years of being stuck in the same hospital bed, Nox decided he was done. Done with the doctors, and the needles, and the endless onslaught of hope. Done with all of it. At this point, the only thing he looked for was death.

Reality might have been tearing itself in two. For endless loops, nothing had changed. In the span of two minutes, everything had. Chase managed, “What... who are you?”
Feeling dizzy, he slumped back onto the ground again, legs folding awkwardly beneath him.
Those moonstone eyes followed him the whole way down, and then the dark-haired stranger crouched to be back on eye level. “I’ll only ask this once, so it would be wise of you to answer completely and correctly,” he said sharply. “How did you get here, and where is your key?”
or, Nox stumbles across a boy who can't remember a life outside of being Cinderella. Both of them have things they are trying to escape from. This proves to be problematic.

For a moment it is simply quiet.
Then a thin, raspy, “Come in.” answers him.
Chase takes a calming breath, in and out. He pushes the door open and lets the soft wash of light carry him in.
The Queen is resting on her sickbed, surrounded by shadows, with only the light of a small lamp hanging above her head. It casts her in gentle spotlight, like a lantern sunk in a deep ocean. When she sees him, her eyes widen slightly and her mouth parts.
“Hello darling.”

Spurred on by a sleepless night, Chase goes on a solo adventure into a book. It seems like the standard fairytale of a princess looking after her kingdom, but... Buddy is nowhere to found and family responsibilities soon start piling on the princess' shoulders.

Summary
Typically, Chase and Buddy butt heads more often than not, but lately, they've had more good days than bad, threats have devolved into banter and playful jabs, and concern for Buddy's living conditions have taken up more and more space within Chase's thoughts. Now set on the decision to rescue Buddy from Ex Libris, Chase must figure out a way to convince Buddy that he can and deserves to be saved, but the chasm of distance between them is wider than he originally anticipated. Eventual happy end, but, geez, the Don Bluth-esque obstacles we gotta go through.
Rated for Teen And Up Audiences for select cursing and later descriptions of a spooky environment.
Time Pocket AU: Cinderella Boy but everything is the same except I've tweaked the definition of how time moves when in and out of stories.

Nox stands in the clearing for long enough that a curious animal approaches him and tries to entertain itself with his cape. Looking down, he sees a brown raccoon.
“You’re not supposed to be here.” he says dumbly.
The raccoon sniffs his shoe. Then it looks up at him with tiny beady eyes that say 'I know what you are.'
Despite not being fluent in raccoon-nese, Nox has a fine tuned sense for when someone’s talking shit and he glares at pint size, daring it to start a scrap it's gonna lose.
This decision will soon come to haunt him.
OR—
Prunella brings her pet into a book, which leads to key Buddy and Violet getting terrorized by a wild, feral racoon in the real world.
