    "Lan Zhan," Wei Wuxian says, and his voice shakes, just a bit. Five slender silver rods, each only about the length of Wei Wuxian's index finger, shine in the lamplight, bright against the dark silk, and tucked at the end of the bundle, a tiny stoppered glass bottle. "Lan Zhan, those won't fit."

    Lan Zhan grasps the bottle and one of the rods - not one of the smooth ones, but made up of beads - in one hand, then rolls up the bundle again and sets it aside. He turns back, gaze heated and hungry as he stares Wei Wuxian full in the face, intent on where Wei Wuxian chews his lower lip fretfully.

    "Wei Ying used to say the same about my cock," Lan Zhan says, low, and uses his current position, kneeling between Wei Wuxian's spread legs, to thrust once.     The wind was awfully cold for summer— sharp, biting, strong enough to rock the little boat until it creaked like a dying thing. Strange, Wei Wuxian thought distantly, watching the black water lap against the hull. But then again, what was not strange anymore?

    It had been the worst monsoon anyone could remember— an unending cycle of storms that had turned their land into a grave of drowned things. The Yangtze had never been a gentle river, but it had never been this cruel either. It had moods: everyone with a brain knew so. Yet, this was no longer temper alone. This was rage, overtaken and unrelenting, without an end in sight.

    It did not surprise him when the elders gathered beneath the flooded pavilions and declared that the river god must be appeased— that someone must be offered to still its wrath. This barbaric act of giving a God human brides felt like an inevitability: and, for such thoughts, Wei Wuxian stood before they could call for volunteers. His voice almost sounded calm, though his hands had been trembling behind his back in despair.

    Better him than one of them. Always him, rather than them.

    Wei Wuxian had never expected to have a dragon for a groom.
