The Fire Nation notices that the royal siblings work like a well-oiled machine. They are trusting of each other in a way nobles rarely are. When Firelord Zuko is crowned, he has a determined glint in his eye and compassion in his smile which isn't common for Firelords. Princess Azula lurks in shadows, smiling menacingly at anyone who has the audacity to not clap at her brother's coronation. Some wonder if they'd been born that way. The royal siblings beg to differ.

Summary
They gravitated towards Zuko whenever the temperature dipped even slightly. At night, he often woke to someone pulling their bedroll towards him, or slipping under his arm, or turning over in their sleep and colliding with his shoulder.
It alarmed him, at first. It had never been a good thing when someone woke him in the dead of the night.
It was strange, then, that he was on the run without Uncle, officially a traitor to his homeland, and for the first time since his mother left, he woke in the night sandwiched between bodies, feeling safe.
(Zuko becomes the group's heat-pack.)

AU: Canon Divergence from 2x8 "The Chase" where Azula chooses to shoot Zuko and makes her escape instead of going for Iroh. Also she decides to use lightning, because hey if she kills Zuko then maybe Iroh will be too fucked up to fight. Listen it made sense in her head okay, how was she supposed to know that her brother's a stubborn cockroach, that the Avatar's compassion was literally boundless, that he was traveling with a waterbending healer skilled enough to save him?
AKA: A Life Changing Field Trip but it's like half of book 2 and Zuko's incredibly injured and also Iroh is there

Sokka staring down at his hands, wide eyed and afraid, but he wouldn’t mention that last part. No, not in front of Katara. That could be something he could mull over in the privacy of his own mind, thank you very much. It..It had to be him, he dropped his hands and tried to push at the water like he’d seen Katara and Aang do so many times. The water gave a sploosh, the surface dipping and rising once more before returning to normal.
