Summary
“Eighteen years ago, an earthquake ripped through Gotham City, and in the aftermath, instead of helping, the US government sealed the city under a ‘quarantine’ and left them to die. Two years later, when signs of life and even civilisation were still detectable inside the shattered city, the government sent the military in to reclaim and rehabilitate Gotham. Gotham has not forgotten, and they have not forgiven either.”
An AU where an altered version of No Man’s Land happened while Bruce was in his late teens/early twenties, and Batman was born in the hellish crucible of a trapped city that was left for dead and then violently retaken. Gotham may pretend to run by mainlander rules for the sake of those who would have died otherwise, but under the surface, Bruce, Jim, Leslie, Ivy and Oswald and their pack keep their own council, and look with jaundiced eyes on the mainland.

Summary
Bruce doesn’t know what’s wrong with his child, but he’s pretty sure kids aren’t meant to work like this.
From the day he had looked up into the tops of the circus tent and saw a frightened mirror image of a boy who had just experienced the worst day of his life, Bruce had instantly gone into emergency mode.
The Gotham PD had wanted to pass the boy off into the care of the circus. The circus had mumbled underneath their breaths about superstitions, about not having a boy like that with them, about not being able to handle something like Dick. So GCPD, not knowing what to do, had started talking about one of the handful of overburdened boy homes that handles a majority of Gotham’s unlucky orphans.
All the while, the camera lights flash bright and loud, wanting to know everything.
Bruce couldn’t let that happen.
Not then, not ever again.

Bruce is trying his best to protect the city that he loves. He doesn't know how exactly his Robins came to be- they're not fully human, not even at all. All he knows is that he wants to keep them safe.

Summary
Something about its gaze unnerves Bruce–it’s too still, too dead, too cold– and it speaks to the primitive human part of his brain that says ‘enemy!’. Something inside of him tells Bruce that he should kill it before it’s too late. It’s different. Dangerous.
The child, a boy with trailing bruises along his pale skin and eyes that shine just a bit too green, pauses. His fingers nervously pick at the iron collar around his throat.
Despite his petite frame and defeated posture, he registers as an absolute threat.
“You want to kill me too, don’t you?” He whispers, thin voice resigned and tired, the cadence of a man on death row. He sounds as if he’s exhausted by Bruce’s fear.
“How do you know?” Bruce has to ask, curiosity peaking despite how much the hairs of his arms stand up. .
The boy only shrugs.

Bruce has a bad habit of picking up abominations, but he's learned a long time ago that sometimes the only thing that monsters need to stop being monsters is a little bit of love.
