But of course with espionage, especially the flavour linked with known maverick James Bond, it's never that easy and there's a surprise waiting for him when he gets back, forcing him into a fight for his life.

“Oberhauser is still alive,” Q explained, tapping at the keys. “The ring proves it. And it seems they were all part of one organization. Le Chiffre, Quantum, Sciarra, and your friend Mr. Silva.”
Bond’s mouth quirked. “My friend?”
“He certainly isn’t mine,” Q replied. “There was trace DNA from all of them on the ring. And do you know who links them all?” He looked up before Bond could reply and met the other man’s gaze over his shoulder, mouth curling just a little as he prodded, “Go on, give us a guess.”
“Him,” Bond rumbled ominously, voice low and black. Near to Q as he was it would only take a shift of weight from one foot to the other to bring their mouths together.
Madeleine felt herself flush faintly at the realization, but didn’t look away. How very interesting.

Bond was silent. He stood there, in the dark by Q's kitchen table, just watching. What else was there to say?
“I don’t know when I realized you weren’t.” Q’s eyes were covered in shadow as he leaned on the kitchen counter, staring. Bond was distinctly happy that he couldn’t see them. “I kept writing them though.” Q gave out a dark laugh.Q didn't realize Bond wasn't coming back when he took the car, and writing letters soon became a habit. Five years later Bond is left with a lot of history to catch up on.

“You’re not 007,” says the henchman, clad tip-to-toe in black, head cocked in confusion.
“Unfortunately, I am,” says Q. “And believe me, I’m much more put out by it than you are.”
When James Bond goes missing and is presumed dead yet again, the only person MI6 deems suitable to take his place is the man responsible for planning all of his outstanding missions: Q. Entirely against his will, Q finds himself thrown into active service as the new 007. Much to everyone's surprise, not least Q's, he turns out to be a natural. He might even be a better 007 than Bond ever was.
And Bond's not going to stand for that.
