He trusted Ink. He trusts Ink. They had to have a reason. They wouldn't hurt him, he really let himself believe--
Ink saved him. They told him he was good, he was worth it, until he could even believe it himself on good days. They had good days together.Why? Why help him, hold him, promise him, he was good, he would be okay-- just to kill him now?
He still trusts Ink more than he trusts himself. He must have deserved this.

Error has a nightmare. Ink is there to hold him when he wakes up. How could he even dream of that, when the real Ink is so kind?
[Set in this series' multiverse, but can be read as a standalone. The most important context is that Error used to be the Destroyer, except that didn't actually happen in real life, but everyone remembers as if it did. Now he's sane and can feel guilt-- which means he feels a *lot* of guilt, since he remembers murdering thousands of people who never actually existed. Ink knows it wasn't real and they're close friends. And Error is a sad damp cat.]

Reaper loved Geno so terribly much, losing him was like losing a part of himself. But finding Error was wonderful, a heartfelt reunion of an old love and a gradual falling in love anew all over again, both tenderly mixed together. That was his point of view on it every moment. Error, on the other hand... His perspective needed some polishing. Accepting change takes time, after all.

That day had been one of those more hectic ones.
Nightmare had appeared sitting at one of his tables with that one guy with no eye lights who always cried black tar a good thirty minutes before Ccino would have usually opened the doors to his cafe, just so nobody outside could miss their presence and rumors would spread. He had only left two hours after closing time.
One hour after that, it was midnight already, and he’d only just finished cleaning up, shutting down all the machines, and closing the shop. All he had left to do was bring out the trash and check on the two strays he’d spotted out back recently. They hadn’t let him approach them quite yet, but they had started to feed from the food he left out for them on paper plates (when he could spare those) or cans. It was a small step, but a good one.
Imagine his surprise when, as he went to dump two huge trash bags in the dumpster out back, he found the henchman who had accompanied the god that day asleep with their back against it and the two skittish strays cuddled up on their lap, purring up a storm.

Summary
Following an attack that revealed an elaborate plot to end his life and left him severely injured, Cross is forced to not only stop being Nightmare's bodyguard, but accept a bodyguard of his own. Nightmare insists that he'll need the protection while he lays low and waits for the situation to get resolved, but Cross isn't so sure. Even though he's decided to put up with it for Nightmare's sake, he is not happy about it.
The only thing that could possibly make this worse was if, by some insane turn of fate, his new bodyguard just so happened to be his soulmate.
