Dean Winchester was 27 years old when Officer Novak led the 40th crusade to rescue him from Micheal Milton's basement.
Dean Winchester had no idea how to move on. He was lost, surrounded by family who loved him, a brother who longed for the familiar bond they once had, a father who hovered and a police officer who kept dropping by to give him bags of tea and cookies.

Most of the awful things that happened to Dean are implied or mentioned in passing, because the focus is much more on 1) how Dean is grappling with recovery after being in captivity for so long, and to a lesser extent 2) the unanswered questions about his kidnapping. Being strictly in Dean’s POV while he drifts between being aware of the present and getting lost in his memories is haunting. And Cas is wonderful as the quiet lifeline.
The story through chapter 14 (chapter 15 is the hiatus announcement) creates the mystery more than resolving it, and Dean and Cas are developing a closer relationship but no real hint of a romantic one. Worth reading for the mystery and if you like a focus on recovery in your hurt/comfort stories.

Castiel is used to the solitude and uneventfulness of his life as the priest of a very tiny, very remote (and not well visited) village church. He might not be particularly fond of the dullness but he's not sure if wounded angels crashing through the roof can be counted as a blessing.

Castiel is one of many slaves on Alistairs estate, trained to be obedient so long ago he can't remember a time where he wasn't serving his masters. All he wants, is to be able to blend into the background as he obeys. He's injured quite badly one day, when a police raid throws his life upside down. Taken away from his current hom as evidence (and to be tortured for information, Cas has heard the horror stories told in the slave quarters) he hopes he survives the ordeal ... only ... slavery isn't legal. At all. And all Dean wants is for Cas to figure out how to live a fulfilling life as a free man (and mnaybe also testify in court to put some very bad men behind bars).

The premise is a lot of severe Castiel whump that takes place prior to the beginning of the story, but the main tension comes from Cas being woefully unprepared for life on the outside, and Dean’s inability to be an effective caregiver because he doesn’t understand the prison of fear Cas is creating for himself. It’s compelling stuff as it is.
Readers should be aware that the story presently leaves off (chapter 28 is the last completed as of this writing) at a pretty awful moment for Cas.
Update early 2025: absolutely thrilled to be able to take this out of the collection of “awesome WIPs which haven’t been updated in a long time”. So very much enjoying the recent updates!

"There's no safer place for you than here," Dean assures him, as the impala climbs upwards, the road turning narrower and bendier. "It's a hunter's guesthouse, kind of. Really quiet area. No one will ask questions."
"I see," Castiel says, hands tightly folded in his lap.

As Cas is ordered to leave the bunker, he doesn’t end up at the Gas n’ Sip. Instead, he becomes a worker at a hunter’s guesthouse, situated in the middle of nowhere - where time appears to stand still, and he is left with an aching human body, relentless human chores, and recurring nightmares that feel distinctly like memories. So, he copes with his new form of existence the obvious way: by learning to shoot guns, ride a motorcycle, and to entertain the incessant flirtations from the other resident James.

Claire decides to invite them all to their upcoming wedding, convinced that they are going to recognise their father on sight. What could go wrong?
Dean Winchester may not understand why his child wants to get married at twenty-two, but he wants to give Claire and Krissy the perfect wedding nonetheless. Now, that would be much easier if there weren't those three guys from his past running around on the island, who cannot under any circumstances find out about Claire. And no, Dean does not still have feelings for one of them. At least that's what he keeps telling himself.

I haven’t actually seen Mamma Mia, so I can’t say how closely this hews to the movie. That said, I think Dean’s voice really comes through, which you don’t always see in an AU, and the setting is captured well, which is notable as movie fusions sometimes assume you can paint in the setting etc. from your knowledge of the movie.
As of this bookmark, the plot hasn’t gotten Dean and Cas back together yet, but it’s worth a read anyway. -

Summary
Sirens thrive off sacrifice. The rush of it. The ability to get some idiot to throw over all their ill-gotten gains, that moment when an asshole openly declares themselves and ruins their own goddamn life?
Perfection.
Downside is, most hunters would rather kill a siren immediately over that kind of thing. It's a rare one that stops to wonder if the siren is a hunter too. Thankfully, there's at least one. For now.

Castiel’s stoicism and devotion to the life of a warrior frame every observation he makes. And makes reading the sexual assault by the king (with Dean an unwilling participant) particularly awful as Cas at no other point recognizes his own vulnerability. Expressive language, you can feel the wind through it.
