Stiles gets a tattoo when he turns eighteen. Derek notices. Quietly.

The tattoo is vein-like and strange, but it’s so very…right. It’s not necessarily a picture, but free-flowing lines that wind around his arm and dip and dance around his scars. It makes him feel free, makes him feel powerful.
He goes in for his second tattoo when he’s about to leave for school in Southern California.
It's not so much of a second one as a continuation. He decides that, though the pattern isn't of branches it acts like them, so he branches it down over his shoulder and down to the center of his back, kind of like draping a toga. At the center of his back the lines concentrate and sort of circle. He adds a splash of jade-shaded almond shapes and feels stronger somewhere deep inside.

Derek didn’t look at all like Stiles expected. After all, he deliberately chose a school where being a nerd was cool, so he certainly wasn’t expecting his hotter-than-a-thousand-stars roomie to be an actual cool person. Derek has muscles, like everywhere, which he has a tendency to display in skin-tight, sleeveless t-shirts for bands Stiles has never heard of; his jeans are always tight and ripped too, and he has an impressive five-o’clock shadow, the tips of his jet-black hair dyed purple. And his eyes. Stiles is pretty sure he’s only seen eyes like that in comics, or on a movie screen, or in his freakin dreams. They’re somehow simultaneously all of the colors and none of them, transcending something so pedestrian and insignificant as words to encapsulate their beauty. Stiles would come to learn that he's also wickedly smart, and he plays the guitar and speaks multiple languages, and his sunshine smile is even more alarming that his resting murder face.

"Derek? Fancy seeing you here! I was just-er, getting a new chair. I think mine has a squeaking problem so...yeah I'm just gonna take a chair and--"
The man closed the door with a soft click before holding up the Captain America sticky note with Stiles' patented chicken scratch handwriting on it. Stiles gnawed on his lip, trying and failing to come up with some sly excuse. Instead he hung his head in defeat when Derek didn't so much as say anything or make a move.
"Enough playing around; I dig you, and it's your last day. Meet me in the abandoned closet at one," Derek quoted, a hint of amusement in his tone.
Stiles sighed, "okay not the best choice of words, but it got you here didn't it?"
"Yes it did," Derek nodded before adding, "and I dig you too by the way."

When he glances to his side, expecting to see Isaac, his brain seems to malfunction. Because it isn’t Isaac. Summary
Derek and Stiles are the most typical combo of nerd plus geek two teenage boys could be; and as stereotypical as they could ever get, they're each other's only friend. That usually doesn't bother Stiles much, Derek is the best best friend he could ever hope to have, but sometimes when he thinks about his fate of possibly not having his first kiss until college, he starts wishing he had a few more friends--or at least more people who were a bit more interested in him other than when they need to copy his notes.
In a fit of curiosity about how kissing feels like, Stiles proposes Derek that they each be the other's first kiss--strictly platonic, of course. But afterwards, Stiles can't stop noticing how hot Derek is, can't stop thinking about kissing and touching him.

The five times Derek and Stiles "fake" kiss and one time they take things further.
