I've seen this idea a few times, but this is my version of what could have happened if Sam was Gabe's son.
"Mary Campbell was a strong woman who had left hunting behind to raise a family. The Campbells were known to be some of the most knowledgeable hunters on the planet. He promised to alter her family’s memories so they would accept the child as their own. He should have known that she was THE Campbell. He should have paid more attention to her husband’s last name. Should have realized all the other Campbells were dead. She didn’t mention a deal with a demon. Her soul didn’t show any signs of being claimed for hell. He should have known.

The Cage was never meant to hold a human. It was meant for one archangel, not two, and definitely not a human soul. Little by little Sam's soul was being destroyed by the torture the Cage inflicted on it. Lucifer and Michael joined together and, with their combined grace, pieced together Sam Winchester's soul and sent him out of the Cage and into the past in the hopes that he can stop this whole thing before it even starts.
Only, when Sam lands, things don't quite go so well. He's not all that sure that this isn't another torture the Cage has provided for him. He's in the past, right after Dean got out of Hell, and he's nowhere near the same man he was before. He can barely remember how to function as a human. It's going to take his family and a little help from a surprised archangel for Sam to start to recover. He doesn't have much time, though, because the apocalypse is still coming and the angels are fighting to get Lucifer free. Can one broken man manage to change the past? Or are they doomed to repeat their same mistakes over and over again?

This is something I wrote and Posted YEARS AGO on Fanfiction Dot Net.. I am Copy/Pasting.. But I'm not bringing in all of the A/N's with it the way they're Posted there because they won't make sense as the Fic is OLD.. I'll do an entire extra bit for ONLY SOME of the A/N's and WARNINGS at the end of the entire Fic.. This was Published in 2012 and Completed in 2014 and Supernatural was pissing me off with how they were treating Sam at the time..
Picks up in Season 8 Episode 9 that Mid-Season Cliffhanger they left us with that Season ..

Attempting to keep her children safe, Mary tells her husband that they can't hunt the way he wants to. Instead of accepting that, John hits the road - taking the newborn Sam with him - to find the creature that destroyed their home, leaving Dean to be raised Mary's way.
Both put out fantastic hunters, but this difference will change the entire world.

Unable to watch Magda be harmed again, Sam tells Mrs. Peterson that he's psychic as well. She offers him the same option: confess his sins.
In order for the scene to work, I took a small creative liberty here and had Sam chained to the ground by one hand, instead of with his hands tied/cuffed behind his back like in the actual episode.
