He nudges Jason with his boot. “Hood.” He says, loudly. Jason doesn’t stir.

The kid is standing in the middle of the grimy street, facing the destruction, silhouetted against the glow of the flames. Even from forty yards away, it’s clear he’s panting hard. One hand is pressed to his neck, the other arm hanging limply at his side barely holding onto his gun. It finally drops, the weight too much to support with the twisted length of rebar running through his shoulder.
Blood is dripping from his fingertips, pooling around the dark metal, diluted by the oily puddle.
He sways. And when his knees give out, Slade makes the split-second decision to catch him.

For once, he didn’t see a body of mangled flesh and bones. He saw himself. Alive. Whole. Surviving through an ache that wasn’t soul-deep, a pain that didn’t haunt him with the echoing trill of laughter.
Ah, as soon as the thought flitted through Jason’s head, he bit his bottom lip. He worried it between his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut. Damn, okay. Perfect time to come to that realization.
With a derisive snort of laughter, Jason said, “Maybe you’re right.” He wanted to hold on to the anger in his chest, but the heat dissipated like smoke caught in a gusty wind. It drained with his will to fight, and when he said, “Maybe pain is the only love I know,” Jason just sounded tired.

In which Bruce, concerned for Jason's safety, interrupts a post-mission tryst between the Red Hood and Deathstroke. And after Slade bears witness to an argument that brings Jason's perception of love and abuse into question, he decides to show Jason there's more to pleasure than just pain.

“So what, you would’ve killed me then, but you won’t fuck me now?” Grayson demands, his hands coming to rest on his hips in a gesture of indignation. He’s so attractive that Slade’s gut twists at the sight of him, and he swallows back a growl that threatens to come out of his throat.
“Yes,” Slade agrees after taking a deep breath, “because I’m a mercenary, not a rapist.”
“For fuck’s sake Slade, I’m not a child anymore! I’m twenty three years old, and I’m perfectly capable of making my own choices.”
And that - that’s true.
