Summary
The first sign that the world in which Shang Qinghua migrates into is different from his novel comes in the form of Mobei-jun—or more accurately, in the form of Mobei-jun’s clothes.
The Mo Clan emblem is an embroidered motif on his robes—but the colour of the robes itself still shocks Shang Qinghua out of his moral dilemma. His robes are red and black instead of blue and silver. The thick regal coat which Shang Qinghua has lovingly designed for his king is nowhere to be found. There are no beads braided in his hair, and he wears no sapphire hair pins. In fact, there is little blue on him at all aside from his demon mark, and it almost makes Shang Qinghua balk. He drops the rock he was contemplating bashing Mobei-jun’s head with, and wipes the sweat away from his forehead instead.

Summary
Mobei-jun has long mastered the act of refining information from Shang Qinghua’s rambles. It is a necessity, as Shang Qinghua talks a lot.
He obfuscates, distracts, and deflects. He cries when he wants to divert attention. He mumbles under his breath when he’s thinking. He blurts unnecessary information as a way of barraging his enemies. In short, Shang Qinghua uses his words similarly to how a demon might use their powers, as a tool or a weapon, depending on the situation. The times where Shang Qinghua talks the most, however, is when he thinks he’s alone.
When Shang Qinghua is doing paperwork, when he's tucked inside the privacy of his Leisure House, is when Shang Qinghua forgets himself enough that he drops his cowardly veneer. Then the snivelling, grovelling little cultivator is no more—and Shang Qinghua curses everyone and everything under the sun as if no one is listening.
Mobei-jun is always listening.

Summary
So, Tim has two choices from here on out. He can continue on as he is, live in plausible deniability and have Lieutenant Montoya and her task force dog his every step once he's out in the field… or he could throw her a bone, and give her a push in another direction. Tim will most likely still be dogged around when he's on the field, but he can make it so that the officers are a little more sympathetic towards him.
All right. If Tim’s going to pull things completely out of his ass, he might as well have some fun with it.

Ann was full-blown ugly crying: tears, snot, flushed face, all the expected accoutrement.
Somehow, this was his problem.
There was no way she could have known, but her timing was impeccable. He'd been in a guilt-induced fugue state watching his tea over-steep on the counter wondering how, if there was any justice in the world, a miserable sack of shit such as himself was allowed to suck air when she showed up at his doorstep at eight-thirty PM, eyes already puffy, and asked, damply, if she could stay over.
He doesn't hate Ann, most of the time. She's a little vapid sometimes, a little too bubbly for his tastes, but somehow he doesn't mind her dragging him along on errands as much as he imagined he would. Still, even with her obviously in tears, he would have found an excuse, or called the police, or something before letting her step foot into his apartment, if he weren't currently in the bowels of self-loathing.
As it was, he let her inside without saying much of anything.

Summary
"Welcome to the Velvet Room," the man says, gesturing with one of his too-long arms at the unstable space around them. His voice sounds surprisingly kind and wizened, and it should probably be reassuring, but it only serves to put Goro even more on edge. "I am Igor. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Wha—" Goro tries, but his voice is shaky and small in a way that makes him sound years younger than his actual age — which is unacceptable, and he has to swallow, hard, before he can try again. "What— where is this?
"This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter," the old man replies. As if that's actually an explanation.
Akechi wakes up in the Velvet Room after dealing with the ruler of Royal's final palace.
