Of course he could write a book—he, who’d taught himself everything he knew about swordsmanship, who’d held his own against the best swordsmen in the Caribbean, who’d survived countless battles. And the way she looks at him when she says it, her eyes sparkling with admiration, as though there is nothing he couldn’t do, makes him believe it isn't such a far-fetched idea after all.
“Swordfighting Essentials by Will Turner,” she says again, smiling that mischievous, teasing smile of hers, though he can tell she isn't entirely joking. “I’d read it. I’d love it. It’d be the best book on swordfighting ever written.”

The first time Will ever saw Elizabeth, he was only twelve, pulled from the wreckage of the ship that had exploded and left him adrift, barely alive. He remembered the haze of that moment— he had just gained consciousness, his head spinning, his chest tight with fear and exhaustion—but then there she was. A little girl in a fancy dress, standing over him with eyes wide and full of concern. She reached down, brushing his hair from his eyes, her hand soft and steady.
"I’m watching over you," she had whispered, her voice full of reassurance.
