It takes everything to fight the grin that threatens to upturn the corner of her mouth.
The thrill of being known, being wanted through any means that have them wanting to tear you apart piece by piece, is a gift. To be safe is to be confined, and Ren has no desire to remain a prisoner for the rest of her life.
The woman stands upright and smiles down at her in a way that’s effortlessly picturesque. Still… there’s a certain glint in her eye, something both terrible and fascinating, like being unable to look away from a devastating storm on the horizon line.

Summary
A lump forms in Goro’s throat, and it doesn’t budge even when Ren asks him:
“So, Akechi, could you tell me more about Voltaire?”
And he does.
The evening passes far quicker than he could ever anticipate. It’s in tidbits of knowledge and immersive debates, chess moves that barely make sense anymore, because he’s a little too lost in the low timbre of Ren’s words and the soothing notes of their coffee.
It hits differently, dreadfully, that this is the last time. And that he maybe, possibly, wants this time to last forever.

Goro and Ren spend one "last" evening together, exchanging just a few more words in the time that they have.

Said man leads them to the table set a few feet away from the windows, keeping them balanced at the edge of the world with just the two of them, and Goro feels like he’s been thrown back years into the past – a similar sight soaked into his memory; quiet promises and stolen glances and careful touches etched right into the crevices of his mind from their time in the Tokyo Skytree.
Goro feels his heart rate pick up, barely tuned into the freshwater lake and tower construction trivia tumbling from his boyfriend’s lips as he pours and hands over a glass of rosy champagne.
Joker’s words are rehearsed and nervous and terribly, disgustingly endearing, despite himself.

Having enjoyed two weeks in each other's company exploring the bustling Canadian city of Toronto, Goro and Akira steadily wrap up their longest trip yet with an evening at the CN Tower. Still, Goro can't quite shake the feeling that something is amiss about his partner...

Summary
The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)

Ren’s weight leans heavy into Goro's side as they pile onto the train. Yoshizawa’s dead to the world, limp as a sleeping child. Ren’s jaw goes slack as he starts to doze on his shoulder; there’s at least three black eyes between them.
They must be quite a sight.
