Summary
"Don't," says Akechi. His voice shakes. He wraps his arms around his middle like he's bleeding out from his core. "Go away. Don't bother with me, there's no point, I'm dead, I... fuck." He laughs, but even Ren, the curator of all things Goro Akechi, has never heard him make such a sound; despair has always taken him differently, wild and keening, barely leashed.
For a moment, Ren is back in the engine room, with Akechi crumpled on the cold floor before him, defeated and alone. Instinct screams a warning in the back of his head.
Under the effects of despair, Akechi lets slip a secret he would have preferred to take back to the grave. It's a kick in the teeth—no, it's worse, it's so much worse—but Ren can deal with it. He can deal with anything. He has to.
He wishes his friends would stop asking if he's okay.

Summary
Akechi knows that he’s not supposed to be able to hear Morgana. Maintaining the illusion of ignorance is vital if he wants to gain Akira’s trust and guarantee his death. It’s just a shame that Morgana insists on testing his patience during every interaction. The amount of insults he’s had to endure with a straight face is ridiculous. Still, he tells himself that he just has to curb his indignation until November. Then his plan will culminate in the assassination of the Phantom Thieves’ leader. With Akira gone, Shido will win the election - and Akechi’s moment for revenge will arrive.
He’s so close to victory that he can taste it in the back of his throat. If the biggest obstacle to his success is a talking cat, then he’s gotten pretty lucky.
Unfortunately, he underestimates just how much of a roadblock Akira himself will turn out to be.

Summary
"Maybe I want to get hitched young," Akira says, instead of saying I'm in love with you. "If I was to get married, you'd be up there on the list."
Goro squints at him like he can't decide if Akira's joking or not. Then again, it's Goro. He probably does have Akira figured out, even if he doesn't want to believe it yet. "I tried to murder you. Twice. Did you get hit on the head?"
Akira and Goro work some things out.

Summary
“I really need to talk to somebody after today,” he says, entirely honestly. “But he lives in Kichijoji,” (he thinks), “A-and I don’t have his phone number anymore since my phone got wiped,” (technically also true), “And I know that’s not super close, and I didn’t wanna just disappear without telling you where I was or why I was gone.”
There. He hasn’t lied to Sojiro. Akira feels like a god damn winner, if a winner could also feel like death twice warmed over.
Heh.
It's April fifteenth, and April nineteenth was six days ago; it's been a long day, and a long week, and a long year, for all it has not, in fact, been a year. It's been the kind of day that hurts.
In wildcard terms, that means it's a day for deals. He has to be able to save someone.

Summary
The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)

Ren’s weight leans heavy into Goro's side as they pile onto the train. Yoshizawa’s dead to the world, limp as a sleeping child. Ren’s jaw goes slack as he starts to doze on his shoulder; there’s at least three black eyes between them.
They must be quite a sight.

It’s typical that on their first trip away, Goro’s first trip to Europe, a suitcase goes missing. At least this time, fate is kind enough to make Akira the one to suffer, as Goro’s suitcase was one of the first to arrive at the airport.

Summary
Akira couldn’t feel his hands anymore, a blessing, probably, considering his frostbitten toes ached with every step he took. He didn’t try to warm himself anymore, entirely focused on the figure marching forward ahead of him, of their escape just a little ways ahead.
How was Akechi still moving? How was he moving even faster? Every step Akira took sent freezing snow into his boots, seeping into his legs and forcing him to slow as they crystallized. The wind lashed them like a whip, each hit beating them back little by little.
Akira only fell behind by a step at first.
Or: Years after the Phantom Thieves destroyed their last god, Akira and Goro are invited to a remote cabin for Haru's yearly holiday get-together. Trapped and isolated by an unexpected snowstorm, they're forced to face the many issues that come with repeatedly dying and coming back to life.- Language:

Summary
Every time the bell chimed and Akechi’s sharp, guarded frame entered the shop, Ren’s eyes would lock onto him. It wasn't the suspicious look the others gave him. It was a look of profound relief, like Ren had spent the last year holding his breath and Akechi was the first lungful of oxygen he’d had since the world changed.
The problem was that Akechi looked like he was constantly waiting for someone to punch him. He sat in the booth with his shoulders up to his ears, nursing a coffee like it was poison, looking miserable while Ren tried to make small talk. It was painful to watch. And Ryuji hated it. Not because of Akechi—though the guy was still an arrogant prick—but because of the way it made Ren’s shoulders drop when the conversation inevitably stalled into awkward silence.
So, Ryuji decided to be a bro. If Ren wanted this guy around, Ryuji was gonna make it happen. He’d put in the work. For Ren.

Summary
"I'm… having trouble sleeping," Akira admitted lowly, kicking at a pebble beneath his shoe. "In general."
He glanced up as the silence hung a moment too long, ready for his dismissal, and saw an internal war taking place behind Akechi's eyes instead.
Finally, "Come with me." and Akechi turned on a heel and marched away.
Akira blinked, caught off guard. Akechi didn't turn to check Akira was doing as tasked, so sure that he would. Akira smiled fondly. Akechi's choice surprised him, but it was far from unwelcome.
He jogged to catch up, settling at Akechi's side. He didn't even think to ask where Akechi was leading him, just… content to be at his side again.

Akira is tired, he’d much rather walk his bruised body up the creaky cafe stairs and lay uncomfortably on his sorry excuse of a bed until he passes out than experiencing whatever berating Akechi is about to give him.
Akira, stubbornly, foolishly, tells no one he's feeling under the weather. He pays the price, leaving him at the mercy of his own complexes. It doesn't help that Akechi has some choice words for him.

Summary
“Akira,” Goro says calmly, and Akira finally finds the strength to meet his eyes.
It’s scary, but the world doesn’t end. His eyes are familiar, a comfort, and it scares him more how easily they soothe him, because no matter how hard he searches, he can’t find any concrete evidence on whether they’re real or not. Goro’s eyes are firm and genuine. In direct contrast, his calm demeanor radiates off of him where Akira knows his own terror must be pouring off in waves. Despite that, Akira can see his concern in the determined searching of his eyes, and the tension of his brows.
That Akira knows that if something was totally and utterly wrong with the world around him, that if Goro had come to the same conclusions that he had, he wouldn’t be looking at him like this, makes him want to trust it so bad. That, and the feeling that he owes it to him to say something, lets him overcome himself enough to speak.
“Is this…” he chokes on his words. He tries again, hands squeezing, “Are you real?”
