“Yeah, well,” Barry folds his arms across his chest, sort of distracted thinking about the caseload he’ll be met with once he returns to the lab, “you’re lucky I love you.”
It’s only when Hal lets out an awkward laugh and draws back to look at him funny that Barry realizes what exactly he’s just said.

“There’re people who love you, too,” Hal says, his voice slightly wavering. “People who would do… anything. Anything to have you back with them.”
Hal pushes back the hood on his head, letting it pool around his neck and shoulders, and Barry can see his entire face, from the deep frown tugging at his eyebrows and lips to the despair glimmering in his eyes. The years of compounded grief that, even in death, has left him looking aged and worn. Barry’s heart begins to ache.
“I know,” Barry says softly.

Summary
Hal almost misses it; there’s a tank at the back of the building, tucked away in the leftmost corner. The water it holds is so opaque and dark that if it weren’t for the faint light of his ring, there’s no way he would have caught the faintest of movement within the tank out of the corner of his eye. Willing his ring to glow even brighter for more light, Hal approaches the tank, peering into it through the glass.
He gasps.

If the situation was flipped, Barry would know exactly what to do, what to say. Barry has been through thick and thin with Hal, has been his rock during his darkest moments, but the one time Barry needs that same kind of help Hal feels like he's failing to deliver at every turn.

“What a nerd.”
Barry had been haunted by these words all his life, seeing as they were his soulmate’s mark. It came out during puberty, just like everyone else’s, but by then he was already well on the way to being a ‘nerd’ so to speak. He wasn’t just some guy claiming to be nerd because he was into Dungeons and Dragons or anime, oh no. He was a bona fide science nerd- went to interstate science fairs and competitions even.

Barry Allen was working at the forensics lab of Central City PD when it waltzes the new transfer from Coast City, Detective Hal Jordan, not just into the lab but also into his life. There’s the matter of them being soulmates- but Barry is unconvinced. Science tells him there’s a likely chance that they’re just platonic soulmates, so Hal suggests an experiment of sorts: they go on three dates, and then decide whether or not they’re just platonic, or something more.
