"You eat?" Peter asks.
Carter looks at him vacantly for a moment, then offers a shrug of his own. "I pillaged the vending machine a couple times."
"When?"
Carter searches the face of his watch for several long seconds. "I don't know."
"Carter, I told you to eat."
"Believe me, I wanted to. The shift just got crazier and crazier." Carter rubs his thumb and forefinger against his temples.
"The girl?" Peter asks softly after a moment.
Carter somehow seems to sag even further. "No change." His eyelids sink like anchors.
Peter nods. Sighs. Pushes to his feet and squeezes Carter's good shoulder. He couldn't help that little girl, but he can help one of the other casualties of yesterday's war. "Lets get you out of here, man."

But it isn't Carter's voice that greets him on the other end of the line. "Hi, Dr. Benton. It's Chuny from County."
"Hi, Chuny," he replies, unease settling over him even as the memory of the nurse's contagious smile floods his mind. "What's going on?"
A beat. Chuny lowers her voice. "It was Carter's first day back."
Or, Carter's first day back at work after his transplant is a bit more challenging than he expected.

When Peter reenters the lounge, Carter is standing in the same place he was when Peter left him, statuesque at the mirror, staring the dead-eyed stare of the once hopeful defeated. At the sound of the door latching shut he snaps out of whatever trance held him, putting on a smirk when he sees who has rejoined him.
"I thought you were going home."
"I am." The immobilizer swings unambiguously from his fist. Now that he's here, he's really not sure how to proceed. He looks down at the sling as if it will provide answers, catches himself, looks back up at Carter.
The kid has noticed the immobilizer, too. He frowns. "Is…that for me?"

Summary
Set in S3. John Carter is hospitalized with a bad case of pneumonia. Eleanor Carter arrives at County General to sit at his bedside. Her visit, however, is motivated not by love for her ailing son, but by something far more selfish. Peter Benton comes to realize that his student's family life is not just complicated, but in fact deeply troubling.
Eleanor Carter didn’t ask questions about how John was doing, about his prognosis, while Peter walked her to John’s room. She doesn’t reach out to him now, doesn’t hold his hand or comb his sweat-slick hair from his feverish forehead. She doesn’t soothe him with comforting, loving words.
She just… sits there. Expression wooden and disinterested. And her eyes keep looking at the door.
