Summary

Woodenly, Caitlyn put her napkin on her lap, and it took a while for her to realize her mother had spoken to her at all, since she was so focused on the décor.
The pristine, white, perfectly-pressed napkins had pastel rainbow embroidery around the scalloped edges, there were seven crystal candle sticks lined up down the center of the table, in color order, and the fresh-cut roses in the vases spread throughout the room were filled with a beautiful rainbow of color.
As her very favorite dish appeared in front of her, tears pricked at the corners of Caitlyn’s eyes.
She sniffed hard, clearing her throat as she tried not to blubber.
“I apologize for my inarticulate response earlier, you took me by surprise,” Caitlyn’s mother said.
Chuckling at the irony, Caitlyn replied, “I took myself by surprise, too.”
Her mother nodded once, like she’d already known that. “Your father and I,” Caitlyn’s mother looked at her father, who abandoned his spaghetti to hold her hand. “We wanted to be sure to tell you that you do not have to hide that aspect of your life from us. You’re our daughter, and I’d hope you already know, but we love you, and we want you to have a full life.”
Caitlyn wasn’t sure what to say, so…she didn’t say anything.
“We also recognize that we have been horrendous matchmakers, and so you will never hear us insist on a date again. Some of our friends do have rather lovely daughters, so we might, on occasion, suggest that one of them might be a good match, but you do not need to worry otherwise.”

The bistro was perfect—intimate lighting, soft jazz drifting through the air, the kind of place designed for romance. But Yelena hadn't anticipated how distracting her girlfriend would be across the candlelit table, how that particular smile would make it impossible to focus on anything else.
Her girlfriend.
Lunch had ended twenty minutes ago, their plates cleared, but neither of them had made any move to leave. Kate's foot was hooked around Yelena's ankle beneath the table, and when she leaned forward to steal a bite of Yelena's dessert, Yelena caught her by the chin and kissed her instead.
"Mmm," Kate hummed against her lips, her hand sliding up Yelena's thigh under the table. "You taste like chocolate."
"You're impossible," Yelena murmured, but she was already leaning in again, her fingers threading through Kate's hair.
The kiss deepened, and Yelena's other hand found Kate's waist, pulling her closer. Kate made a soft sound that went straight to Yelena's core, and suddenly the hand on her thigh was higher, more insistent—
"MA'AM, THIS IS A WENDY'S!"
They sprang apart like teenagers caught by their parents. Kamala was standing next to their table, tray in hand, eyes wide with mock scandal. She gestured broadly at the other diners, several of whom were pointedly looking away.
"Oh my god," Yelena breathed, her face burning hot.
Kate had gone bright red, but she was also fighting back laughter, her shoulders shaking. "Kamala—"
"I don't want to hear it!" Kamala declared dramatically. "There are children here! Well, there aren't, but there could be!" She paused, then grinned wickedly. "Next time I'm telling Natasha.”
Yelena dropped her face into her hands with a groan while Kate dissolved into helpless giggles beside her.

And she doesn’t know why now, why a tiny hug has prompted it, but suddenly she’s thinking about every time Yelena’s helped her up when they’ve sparred, every pat on the back after a mission, every inconsequential brush of the hand along her shoulder.

“I used to love the stars, back in Ohio.” Yelena mutters, minutes later, still staring out into the night. She’s quiet, careful. Measured. It feels important, this moment, so Kate turns to her, all bated breath and bitten lip. Around them, the air is heavy.
“I loved them like I loved fireflies. They were warm. Warm and happy things.” It’s now Yelena turns to face her and Kate feels herself stop breathing. Again, there’s something indescribable in those eyes she’s come to adore, but this feels different than before. This is heat and softness and hope and want all at once. This is a jigsaw puzzle—Kate can see the individual pieces that make up the way Yelena watches her now (there is tenderness and there, just behind her pupils, is nervousness) but the whole picture is yet to be uncovered. What Yelena wants, what she’s about to say, remains an agonising mystery. Kate hates it. Kate loves it.
“You are a warm and happy thing, Kate Bishop.” Voice softer than Kate’s ever heard it before, Yelena’s words send tingles through her veins. It is the single sweetest thing anyone has ever said to her. To be compared to fireflies, to be watched this way—it’s almost enough to have Kate looking to her shoes, bashful. Almost. But that unspoken thing still hangs in the air between them, and Kate’s waiting now, for this immense moment to come to its conclusion so she holds Yelena’s gaze. Holds her breath. Holds her heart in her hands and waits for this woman, this brilliant, perfect, infuriating woman to reach out and take it. She’s had it from the moment you met, Bishop.
“You are also an idiot.”
A little of the tension breaks with that, Kate huffing a laugh as Yelena chuckles at her own insult. The fondness in her tone is not lost on her though—Yelena is still holding something back. And Kate can almost taste it, the way she wants Yelena, the way Yelena stares at her like she holds all the answers to every question she’s ever had. It’s delicate and delicious and so, so close.
Yelena calls her an idiot at least twice a day, but never has she done it while looking at Kate like this.
“You are an idiot, and you are stubborn, and sometimes you annoy me, but…” The words tumble from those lips in hurried sincerity and Kate can’t even find it in her to register offence at the jabs because all the air has been stolen from her lungs. Yelena has stepped closer, looking up at Kate as she had looked at the stars and the moment feels big. It feels huge.

There was something about them, maybe the fact there was always a story behind them, or the way each one added a different level of uniqueness to the person bearing it. She wasn't really sure, but there was just something about them Kate loved.
Even that night, stood on the windy rooftop, her whole body aching, Clint on the ground, being stared down by someone who she very much thought was there to kill her, the thing Kate zeroed in on as she looked at Yelena down the shaft of her arrow was the blemish under her right eye.

“That’s not to say that everything she does is justified, of course,” Eleanor carries on when the heavy moment passes, “You are entitled to your own hurt, and it’s not your responsibility to deal with hers, too. But I know you, and I know that if you push too hard now you’ll regret it later because you are good at heart, Kate. So, don’t be too harsh with her, that’s all my advice.”

"Of what?" Yelena's heart was pounding so loud she was sure Kate could hear it.
"Of you," Kate’s voice was quiet but her words echoed through Yelena's soul. "The bits you've told me about the Red Room, about all the things you were forced to do. You carry that same kind of guilt, even though none of it was your fault either."
"Kate Bishop," Yelena's breath caught. She blinked hard against the sting behind her eyes. "You are going to ruin me.”
"That's not—"
"I mean it as a compliment," she sighed, trying to find the words and the courage to say them out loud.
You have ruined me. Ruined the weapon I was. I used to be a machine—unattached, untethered—but then you came, and now I can't stop wanting things I've never had, never thought I deserved.
She almost got there.

But with Kate, her whole heart had been changed. She wanted differently now, deeply. She wanted Kate and she wanted to be loved by her.
She doesn’t want to go back to before, not when this was after.
She can’t say it back. She can barely fathom it. But it’s there, underneath the surface and behind words that Yelena can’t speak. All she can do is kiss Kate with the love that pumps through her veins. She hopes that it says enough for Kate.
She’s only thought about this in the darkness of night where she can’t look in the mirror and look at the monster that she never thought could be loved. The moments in the dark remind her of Kate
She’s fallen in love with Kate in the same way the sun lights the sky.
How does the sky know when the sun is coming?
Soft colors begin to coat the crest. These moments seem to pass so quickly, but the colors linger. Red and pinks that warm the souls of all who watch, waiting for the moment. Colors that begged to be named dance along the crest, rising slowly. In the moments, everything stays still as the sun comes around the corner. If you didn’t know it was going to happen, you wouldn’t be surprised. It comes slowly. Light grows brighter and brighter until there it is. The thing the sky had been missing all along.
So how does the sky know when the sun is coming?
It only hopes.
