Fine, is what he tries to say, but his throat actually spasms, and the word dies before it's ever born.
Trying again, he clears his throat and carefully selects, “I can handle this myself.”

Not the look in his eyes after long patrols. Not the softness of his morning voice or the way he whispered when it was just them in the dark.
And the world had the audacity to call him beloved.
