When Sabo woke he was in the forest and it was night time, panic surged through him as he jolted up, hands forming into claws only to pause when he caught sight of Ace glaring at him from across the fire. Relief flooded him immediately to see his twin, even if he was angry. “Ace!? You scared me! What's happened? Why are you here?”
“Why am I here?” Ace asked in disbelief. “Oh I don't know Portgas Sabo, why don’t you tell me?”
“… you talked to Luffy…” Sabo said with a pained wince.

Summary
Sabo took what felt like the hundredth deep breath of the day, and finally jumped off of his already tied up boat onto the railing of one of the most infamous pirate ships around.
Someone screeched, and he saw a man —Vista? He was pretty sure that was his name— trip over his own two feet and faceplant in, apparently, pure surprise. It was kind of valid, despite having thought about his entrance for over two hours, Sabo hadn’t really chosen the best option. But in his defense, he wasn’t sure there was a best option, or even a good one for that matter.
“Ah… hello,” very smooth, “I’m not here to pick a fight,” a great continuation, truly. Koala would have hit him so damn hard if she had heard.

.The war went a little different. The papers did not report it all that differently though, and Sabo is determined to figure it out.

Summary
A second of silence passes as Newgate and Makino stare at each other. Newgate knew she was doing her job, caring for Luffy, and making sure that he was safe. But he couldn't help but feel a little offended. He would be a fool to risk his Family.
"Say what you must, but I assure you I love my family rather than being a fool who would endanger them.” He smiles. “Luffy is safe and welcome here.”
For now, that’s enough for Makino to hear.
or Luffy's parents die and Garp is given custody. After Garp gets arrested for abuse, Luffy gets bounced around in the foster system. Eventually he makes it to Newgates.
