Summary
Malcolm, Hoshi, and Travis hit it off from Day 1 - in the deleted frostbite scene between Hoshi and Malcolm, and from the very first moment we see Malcolm and Travis on screen in Broken Bow. Throughout Season 1 and much of Season 2, these three dine together, tease each other, and share meaningful looks on the Bridge (especially when they can't say a damn thing about how their superior officers are acting).
Malcolm is usually considered to be dour, a stick-in-the-mud, friendless and unsmiling. But not when he's with these two. More often than not (when not in A Situation) he has his tongue firmly in cheek, especially when teasing Travis. He shares a sense of mischief with Hoshi. He sits with Travis at movie night, makes a snowman for his boomer colleague (and takes the fall for it), even looks out for Hoshi in her hallucination. And when he was bemoaning his probable fate in E2, thinking he'd died alone, he sat opposite two young ensigns who didn't seem to see this being a problem.
We deserved more of the secondary triumvirate and their charisma and chemistry. So I decided to do something about it.

Summary
Bits and pieces in the slow burn, pre-relationship Hoshi & Malcolm phase, showcasing how these two became close friends and trusted colleagues. Some of the pieces might be moved around to fit the timeline as I deem necessary, and depending on which element I decide to write at which time in the series.
Malcolm & Hoshi always gelled for me, because they both admired and understood each other, and worked together for the best outcomes they could deliver. He protected and encouraged her, she befriended and learned from him. They recognise kindred spirits in each other because both grew up somewhat isolated.
My Malcolm is well in touch with his emotions and, while reserved and controlled, is unafraid to show them to those he trusts. And Hoshi's feisty side - which is visible throughout the show, starting with her swearing at T'Pol in Vulcan in the first episode - has a chance to shine.
Wondering why Hoshi's so BAMF? She was canonically trained at Ranger School (EM pistols and phase rifles) and knows Aikido. And Linda Park was certified for martial arts, combat with weapons (swords, bows, staffs), and is a bronze-level international ballroom dancer - she's got skills, why not put them to good use?

He rolls them, limbs tangling, fingers scraping for purchase, and feels her elbow drive back into his kidney, sharp and deliberate. The pain that flashes up his spine, white-hot, makes him swear. She knows how to fight dirty.
“Cut it out!” He hisses, audible in the space between them.
But she just twists up her face in something like disgust and throws her body out of his hold. Irritation wells up in him, and it’s that – that and her refusal to back down – that makes him kick out when she rolls too close to his feet. The heel of his boot catches her hard, just above the eyebrow leaving a deep, welling cut.
He doesn’t have time to feel guilty; her elbow slams into the same kidney again, as soon as she comes in reach, harder and once again deliberate. Nausea accompanies the throb of pain and he swallows it back.
