Summary
“You speak over twenty languages!” Kaveh punctuates his argument with a slight stomp of his foot. The smooth stone floor of the kitchen is cool underneath his feet. “Surely even someone as boorish as you can learn how to make a cup of coffee!”
Alhaitham smiles as if he’s already won the argument. “Careful, Light of the Kshahrewar. That almost sounded like a compliment directed towards me and not an insult.”
Three cups of coffee that Kaveh and Alhaitham share over the course of their relationship as it evolves from two colleagues at-odds with each other to something far greater.

Summary
Beneath the tree stood a man in white and grey robes, tossing a plaque between his long-fingered palms as he stared at the trunk of the tree. The twisted surface, at certain angles, looked like the broken arcs of a ribcage, pressed into a tree and plated over with bark.
“You’re going to leave?” the woman asked.
Wen Kexing swiped the plaque out of the air. His hand tightened on it for a moment before relaxing. “Luo-Yi. Did my mother send you here to dissuade me?”
“Could you be so easily dissuaded?” Luo Fumeng glided across the petal-strewn surface to Kexing’s side. “After all, I understand the desire for vengeance very well.”

Summary
The young-looking man who’d summoned Zhou Zishu out in the middle of the night didn’t pause until they were well outside the city and in the forest. Only then did the ‘youth’ turn around, frowning at Zishu. Dressed simply in white, with a greatsword at his back, he gave off the air of a young initiate of a Taoist sect.
Zishu knew differently. He’d noticed it instantly in the restaurant when he’d seen the same man gorging himself on a mountain of vegetarian dishes. Sensing what he was, Zishu had ducked quickly up the stairs, ignoring Kexing’s startled “A-Xu?” behind him. Zishu had hoped that the immortal folded unevenly into a human shape before him hadn’t seen him, but that had been an idle wish after all.
