“A year.”
“We can do a year, right?”
Nico nodded, still gripping Will’s flannel. But he didn’t say anything.
“A year,” he finally muttered.
“A year. It’ll feel like an instant once it’s over.”
“But we have to get through it to start,” Nico said.
Will bit his lip.
“And we will.”
When they pulled away, Nico was memorizing every line, every freckle on Will’s face. The way the sun was hitting him at just the right angle, the roaring waves of the ocean reflected in his eyes. A year until he could hold him like he was doing.
For a split second, Nico wanted to tell him to not go, that he was joking and they should still be together. And for that second, he lived in the fantasy where he didn’t watch the car drive off. But in the reality he lived in, Will pulled away, his touch disappearing from his grasp for a possible last time right after he pressed one final kiss to his lips. When Will got into the car, it was like they were now strangers.

“Hey, I’m a gay man. The only things that scare me are God and the government, I just don’t understand all of that,” he said as he gestured to Piper.
She rolled her eyes, but was still smiling.
“But hey, at least you can listen to Olivia Rodrigo’s album and really feel it now.”
Piper let out the loudest laugh she could, her entire body was shaking as she doubled over. Nico couldn’t help but copy her. They had joked about her and Jason breaking up just so she could listen to the album to the fullest about a month ago, but now that joke was a bit too real.
“Oh, god. You’re fucking right.”
Nico decided that he could keep making jokes as it seemed like Piper was starting to feel a bit better.
“God, I wish I had someone to break up with to listen to it. We could go through this together,” he joked, but Piper just grinned and raised a brow.
“Why don’t you just ask someone to date you and then break up.”
“What the fuck?”
“Seriously,” she started, “I think that would be so fucking funny.”
“Who would I even ask to do that?”
“Why not Will?”

“Oh, their Thr-“
“We’re Three Times Fate, how are you all doing tonight?” screamed a voice on stage, the mic booming. The crowd suddenly got denser and every single person in that room had their attention trained on the stage.
When Will looked up, he was met with the strangest man he had ever seen. His shaggy black hair was a mess, like he hadn’t bothered brushing it since he had woken up. His black pants were ripped and torn in a way that was well used and probably beyond old. He had one hand grasping the microphone and the other on the neck of his Les Paul. With dark makeup smudge under his eye, he looked like had hadn’t gotten a wink of genuine sleep in weeks. His shirt was tattered and awkward on his shoulders, hugging his body weird. Everything about this man screamed unstable – and he was the most gorgeous man Will had ever seen.

However, possessing this knowledge made it no less aggravating for him to discover — a full two minutes into his rant about his day — that he’d been venting his frustrations to a complete stranger. As if that wasn't enough, said stranger was also inexplicably determined to hear his story to its end.
