Tenses and waits for him to strike, to end her stream of inquiries and insults with crushing palms, or his fist, or his gun...
Nearly a month passes. It never comes.
Instead, he only feeds them three times a day like clockwork. Let's them shower every few days or so. And takes each and every single thing she throws at him.

Summary
On leaden legs, she stumbles onto the road. She shouldn’t do that, shouldn’t go there, but it’s like her limbs are moving of their own accord. Slowly, Laura inches along the red truck, expecting to see a police cruiser parked behind it.
There isn’t one. Aside from the truck and her Volvo, the road is empty. Did he… leave? No, no, she would’ve noticed a cop car driving off. Confused, Laura steps around the truck and sees what was previously hidden by it.
Her assailant lies next to the front wheels. Laura’s gaze flits from the man’s twitching jean-clad legs to rivulets of blood pooling into creases of his windbreaker to whatever she thought was a cop crouching by the body.
Where the collar of his uniform shirt ends, the fabric puffs out, giving way to coarse black fur. The sheriff now has a wolf’s head on his shoulders.

Summary
Travis doesn't dare step any closer to this creature he has somehow caught. Or wrap both of his hands around the bars again. He knows better than to tempt a wild animal that's poised and ready to bite. He got lucky before, that he didn't pull back bloody stumps where his fingers used to be. Her gentle claws prying his hand away were a kindness he scarcely deserved. But he does continue to smile at her; it is his birthday, after all, and he's still somewhat pleasantly buzzed far below the guilt.

He’s pressed up against her back now, his own parched mouth pressed against the nape of her neck so that she feels it when he replies, “I know.”
Something about how calm he sounds tickles her. “I ‘spose you think you’ll be off to Valhalla.”
He huffs a laugh that stirs her hair, and he uses that as an excuse to smooth it down again, caressing it with his fingers. “Never bought all that. But I reckon there must be something, after. This can’t be it.”
