    WangXian perfection. (Also telepathic smut in ch2.) And a lot of considerations for what telepathy might actually be like, especially with such different minds as theirs. Chs 9 and 10 are really cathartic.

    A fantastic ic AU that's got terribly sad moments like canon but ends even more happily for everyone.

    Note (with spoilers): this is the one where the Jiang have a fake internment camp for WQ's relatives (separate from the village where they actually live); WangXian find they can share LWJ's jindan; the Jin politick their way into the Jiang handing over the yinhufu but WWX draws it back to himself magically; the Jin make a sneak attack in response; and JGY stabs his father with a sliver of yinhufu WWX clandestinely hands him.

    Fantastic fic! Balanced, well-rounded characters (like, LQR doesn't like when rules are violated but overlooks JXY's violations because they're small and he wants to be courteous), good humor balance, fantastic writing.

    13yrs later, when f!MXY is engaged to LWJ (it was supposed to be JGY to LXC, but JGS punished his son by legitimizing and substituting Xuanyu, so LWJ stepped in to spare his brother), she sacrifices her body to bring back the YLLZ. Leaving no notes about what he's supposed to do.

    After a wonderful-terrible whirlwind 24hrs in which WWX discovers JYL and JZX are both alive, s/he marries a LWJ determined to ignore his existence and rides off to the Lan sect. In order to follow the curse marks on his arm (before the marks kill him; he assumes when he finishes his task he'll die anyway, but it's the least he can do for Jin Xuanyu), WWX needs a stronger jindan, so he works hard at his cultivation, in between charming all the juniors on accident.

    Best way to strengthen cultivation? Life endangerment. Unfortunately, LWJ catches him throwing himself off a cliff, a wakeup for LWJ that maybe he needs to participate in his marriage a bit more. JGY (visiting LXC for a few mos) tells LXC this is a cultivation technique not suicide, and LXC opts not to tell LWJ so that LWJ steps up more.

    Note, LSZ, officially adopted by LWJ, was told to expect a terrible stepmother, but she's actually amazing to him and he's like instantly 100% loyal. LJY too of course.

    Later, WWX's training (the seniors were having trouble beating her) results in a WangXian duel that ends in a standstill. Worse, their moves were like at Lan summer school. LWJ gets drunk to compensate while WWX goes to the cold springs, where drunk!ji finds him and they end up falling into bed together, even tho neither one thinks it's a good idea. (WWX doesn't know this body and is lying about his identity and LWJ hated WWX right; LWJ isn't into women and only notices JXY because she's so much like WY and is only initiating because of alcohol.)

    In the wake, their relationship is as if nothing changed. An emotionally-tangled LWJ offers tiny wordless concessions like tying each other's mo'e; he accepts that it's not her fault she's not WWX (hah). WWX let slip to LSZ that the marriage is temporary, "LWJ deserves someone his strength/rank/etc and whom he loves," and LSZ is now even asking LWJ to please never divorce her and also please be nice to her.

    She and JGY have a sweet interaction in the kitchen. He calls her meimei and she calls him ge. He tries to tell her she's worth all of this (her manner opens a huge soft spot in him) and inadvertently confesses that, while LXC will be a rebel and love it, bring him in his bed, give him power on the sect, no, of course LXC would never outright defy the elders and ELOPE with a whore's son. (I suspect JXY-WWX is going to work on fixing this.)

    “You must be the witch,” Wang Yibo says, and Xiao Zhan remembers the caution not to take anything personally.

    “Xiao Zhan,” he offers, settling into the empty chair at the next station over and letting the stylist remove his hat, setting it on the counter in front of him.

    “I know.” Wang Yibo grins at him in the mirror, holding still as the stylist working on him dabs foundation onto his forehead. “I’ve met a lot of singers but I’ve never met a witch before.”

    “Earthwitch,” Xiao Zhan corrects as his stylist combs her fingers through his hair, getting to know the shape of it. He then feels compelled to add, “and how do you know you’ve never met one?”

    Yibo blinks, and then his eyes sharpen. “I would know, wouldn’t I?”

    Xiao Zhan smiles. “Would you?”

    It’s no fault of Xiao Zhan’s that he’s the first earthwitch most people have knowingly met; however he’s about to find out that there’s no one quite like Wang Yibo.

    Excellent! Earthwitch XZ was interesting and the worldbuilding was so cool. Things which carry names (like a famous designer brand) can override and erase a person who wears them, so for idols there's real danger. And Earthwitches need anchors. XZ and WYB find out more about living as they do, while falling for each other.

    Did not read. Author starts off actively bad-mouthing the YiZhan fandom. It's fine if you feel that way, but don't go hurting people and trying to start fan wars by saying so in the intro to a YiZhan fic.
