Summary
Cecil isn't exactly human. Carlos always had suspicions about Cecil during his first few weeks in Night Vale, but didn't find out until he and Cecil began meeting up and going on actual dates. Cecil was both terrible yet horrible at hiding how non-human he is.
Carlos was simply a human, and by this point he had studied his husband extensively, and by now he loved knowing that there was practically no-one who knew Cecil better than himself. However, Carlos was also an unfortunate specific type of human. A Scientist.
Cecil, as a Scientist, decides to fuck around in the lab with some of Cecil's DNA. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Carlos suddenly gains certain... inhuman characteristics that mirror his husbands. Well, this is at least the perfect way to run some experiments. With Cecil of course. Absolutely not because Carlos is curious on what it feels like.

Summary
Cecil's tattoos are acting up and Carlos really wants to help. The problem is, our beloved radio host doesn't feel very confident in his shifting patterns or the feelings they elect from those who make physical contact. Basically, the tattoos can spread from host to outsider when they get worked up. Cecil may not like this, but Carlos sure does when he figures out how good the patterns make the wearer feel.
Aka; the claustrophobic tattoos make Cecil panic, so Carlos assists.

Summary
Carlos likes his routines. No, it would probably be better to say that he loves his routines. Even a small deviation in something as simple as making himself and Cecil their morning coffee could throw the rest of his routine off. A routine being thrown off could leave him irritable for the rest of the day.
He has his routines down to a science at this point. He knows how long everything takes. He knows how hot Cecil likes his coffee, he knows where they keep their preferred mugs, he knows when to pour Cecil’s based off of the noises he’s making in their bedroom. So what was wrong?

Or how one change makes Carlos notice that something odd is happening around Cecil, and it's the worst thing he could have ever imagined.(Based on the theory that when Cecil dies he just gets replaced with a similar Cecil from a different NV.)
