Megan had stayed over in her dorm the night before.
That part wasn’t new. They’d been doing this for since the beginning of last semester—drifting between cramped dorm rooms, toothbrushes slowly multiplying, clothes migrating from one closet to another without discussion. Yoonchae had gotten used to Megan’s things being there: the leather jacket slung over the chair like it had always belonged, the faint scent of her cherry-vanilla shampoo lingering in the pillows long after she’d gone, the way she always kicked her shoes off too close to the door and apologized for it every time.
What was new was the word.
Girlfriend...
Yoonchae and Megan have been official for a month now—no longer hovering around the word relationship or the in-between—but the word girlfriend brings new expectations with it. And as Yoonchae learns, being with Megan means learning when to stay, when to speak, and how to make sure care doesn’t disappear just because it arrives quietly.

“This is nice,” Yoonchae says softly, hair tousled, chocolate-brown eyes warm and open. She glances toward the sunset, and Megan wants to say something, anything. But the words stick, trapped somewhere in her chest.
“Yoonchae,” she starts softly, then looks away, cheeks burning. She doesn’t know what to say. Nothing is leaving her mouth.
Yoonchae watches her, still soft, still open. She leans forward slightly, and Megan’s breath catches, sudden and sharp. One of Yoonchae’s hands lifts to cup the side of Megan’s face, and Megan leans into the touch, unable to look at her.
“Mei,” Yoonchae murmurs softly—the same way she always says it, gentle, as if Megan’s name fits perfectly in her mouth. Megan keeps her eyes shut. She doesn’t want to admit anything to Yoonchae yet, tell her that this flutter in her chest whenever she’s near her is something real.

Summary
She looks down at the glass in her hand, caramel colored soda bubbling and fizzing, and squeezes the lime on the rim inside, tossing it out somewhere into the night. Yoonchae lets out a startled laugh, giving her a sideways glance.
“You taught me how to do that,” Yoonchae says, voice low, eyes soft and a little unfocused. She stirs her own drink—this glowing red mix of soda and cherry syrup that looks way too sweet for anyone over the age of ten—and then her perfectly manicured fingers dip in. She pinches a cherry by the stem and lifts it out, the red dripping for a second before she pops it into her mouth.
For a moment, Megan can’t look away. It’s stupid, really—just a cherry, just a drink, just Yoonchae doing something she’s told Megan multiple times not to do—but the bright artificial red feels like it’s igniting something inside her. She knows that same red is going to be stuck in her mind for the rest of the night.
