Detective C.C. Tinsley is stuck. The investigation into the local serial killer is going nowhere, and more often than not he finds himself drinking to avoid the stinging pain of failure. Ryan is doing his best to help, but the discussions they have usually consist of Tinsley humoring him, while relaxing for the slightest bit in front of the only person who doesn't blame him.
It's almost been a year since the first murder, and sometimes, Shane just wishes he was never transferred here. Sometimes, he wishes he was never here at all.

“I don’t think Ouma-kun is someone who doesn’t want help, he’s just someone who has difficulty asking for it directly… so lying outright to Amami-kun to get him to back off is a bit out of character.”
There’s a pause after Shuichi finishes speaking wherein Kaito and Rantaro exchange an indecipherable look. When they look back at Shuichi, they’re both smiling, Rantaro’s eyes crinkled with fondness.
“Hey, Saihara-kun,” Rantaro prompts. “Why don’t you go check on Ouma-kun?”
“A-Ah? Me?” Shuichi can feel his neck warming for reasons he can’t put into words. “Why?”
“I just think you’d be the right person for it.” Rantaro adjusts the bangles on his wrist, still with that peaceful, unreadable smile on his face.
Kaito, in turn, claps Shuichi’s shoulder. “If you think something’s up, you should pursue it to the end, right? Let us know what’s going on later. It’s pretty weird for the dude to miss class.”

Shuuichi wasn’t an angry person. He felt the occasional twinge of frustration like any other person, but the red, hot flames of rage rarely ever consumed him like how trumpets were stereotyped to be. In fact, he could accurately say that he was the exact opposite of a trumpet stereotype: not prideful and not angry.
But he’d be damned if the high-pitched squeaks of the violinist next door didn’t tempt Shuuichi into climbing out of bed and getting up to throw his neighbor’s instrument out the window.

Shuichi doesn’t know what to say, but he can’t stop dreaming about blood dripping on his head and two sun bursts lighting up a room.
No mystery is unsolvable, but death comes again and again, and Shuichi takes up the mask of a liar and fakes it until he can convince himself it doesn’t mean a thing.
And the audience loves it.
