“That doesn’t matter.” She thinks of the woodpeckers tapping into the trees and sitting under them, waiting for them to find her next. She thinks of standing, as the others murmur amongst each other, out of breath, and waiting for a whisper to catch her way, for that real-girl exhaustion to reach her when it’s time to take their laps and her wooden limbs soar through the air, always with that hollow creaking. “I don’t feel real. I don’t feel like you.”
(She doesn’t acknowledge the Raven that wound her arms around Cedar, sensing the need to murmur into her hair. That Raven’s the one that Cedar lingers on, lasting longer than any of her other limerences, other girls and the sodas they share straws for and the ways they fold their limbs against one another, soft against soft against soft, humming into the warmth that comes.)
