    Summary

“When you’re with her,” Ilya continues, voice rough and breathless, “and she does fuck all for you no matter how hard you close your eyes, do you try to angle your hand so she brushes up on the scar? Do you do everything you can to remember it exists? Am I there with you, Hollander? Always?”

Shane wants to touch him—so he does the only thing he’s allowed to do.

    He throws the first punch.

Or: After Shane and Ilya's first on-ice fight sends the media into a frenzy, the league forces them to date to control the narrative.

    Summary

“Tell me nothing is wrong with me,” he begs, his big brown eyes welling with tears that haven’t yet spilled over, and Ilya miscalculated somewhere along the way. Ilya fucked up.

This is not Quiet Shane. This is the Shane that Ilya can’t control himself around no matter how many years it’s been. The Shane that’s always lurking underneath the surface, ready to drown him at the first sign of Ilya’s weakness—the first drop of blood in the water. This is the Shane that Ilya would send home with bitemarks on his face and arms, all the way up through the second grade, because Shane would smile at him, like Ilya’s own personal sunflower.

Shane gets hard when a classmate from school hits him during a fight. Ilya, his best friend since diapers, knows everything there is to know about sex. Surely, he’ll have a way to fix this.

    Summary

When Ilya answers, he’s greeted with a whimpered moan that goes straight to his head, leaving him reeling like he’s just thrown back another shot. His mouth drops open, the cigarette dangling stupidly from his lower lip for a second until he plucks it free with his other hand.

Holy fuck. He must be dreaming. But the rough breaths filtering into his ear are too real, tethering him tightly to the moment.

“Jane,” he murmurs, gleeful and shocked. “This is not like you.”

Or: after Shane confesses that he can struggle to get off if he's too stressed, Ilya suggests he should just call him next time. He doesn't think Shane would ever be desperate enough to go through with it.

    Summary

All these years he’d wondered, that little childish part of him that loved his mother’s stories, what his soulmate was going to be like. Even as his father made sure he knew there were more important things he had to accomplish, told him over and over that he’d be better off without a soulmate at all – to the point where Tony had wondered if maybe he’d be one of those people whose soulmate had died young - he’d secretly hoped and wondered if he’d be one of the lucky ones.

    And now he knew.

His father had been right all along.

Tony had two soulmates, who already knew each other.

He decided then and there that he was never, ever going to tell them he existed.

And then he woke up in a cave in Afghanistan.

    Summary

“The doctor said it’s retrograde amnesia. He doesn’t remember the game, or . . . any of the last few years, really. He remembers his draft, but not World Juniors the next year, so . . .” Pike shrugs helplessly.

Mind racing, Ilya thinks through the math. Their second World Juniors had been in 2009, 8 years ago. That’s 8 years—or more—of Shane’s life, of Ilya’s role in it, just gone. 8 years of teasing texts and hotel room hookups, tuna melts and Tampa and 'I don’t think I can keep pretending I don’t like you anymore.'

    Blyat.

    . . .

When Marleau's hit leaves Shane missing his memory of the last 8 years, Ilya chooses to walk away. After Shane unexpectedly trades to the Ottawa Centaurs three years later, they are thrust back into each other's lives. Ilya struggles against his feelings that never disappeared. And Shane? He's confused about why so many things about Ilya Rozanov, his years-long rival, feel so familiar...
