She apologized for moments that haven't happened but knew would come. Moments where Longclaw would have another episode and will forget Maureen altogether, moments where the pain in her heart would be too much and spill onto her daughter (Holy shit, her daughter. Longclaw wasn't even sure she should be calling her that).
Longclaw was raised for taking lives, not nurturing them.

Shadow sighed deeply, looking around the wreckage caused by his dearly beloved, universally adored, estranged cousin. The doctor had tore through Station Square once again, attempting to rebuild the ashes into his vision. His gaze swept the horizon, looking for anyone injured. When he saw no more danger, he turned on his heel to stake home and reunite with his couch.
"Shadow!"
Said charcoal hedgehog turned back around on the same heel, all thoughts about his couch fading away in an instant.

Derek reads the text fondly, something warm curling in his being, or whatever’s left of it. Despite how little they got to talk in person, Derek remembers everything he learned about Avery. To say he knew him better than he knew himself would be accurate. Derek isn’t sure what’s going on with him in that moment— or more accurately, some part of him knows what’s going on with him in that moment, his mind is currently just too weary to grasp the infinity of it all— but he knows Avery. Avery is familiar.
Avery makes it a little easier to not get lost in his own, untethered head.

Shadow's feelings had developed over years, and taken nearly as long to accept. Multiple times, Shadow had tried to confess this, only for Sonic to dodge the conversation.
Sonic liked what they had. Something outside simple rivalry and friendship, yet he knew at some point, Shadow's feelings had become romantic, while Sonic's had not. So Sonic dodged the conversation, not wanting to let Shadow down. Or worse, not knowing how to explain that even if he didn't feel the same, his soul still ached for its other half.
OR Shadow loves Sonic romantically and confesses. Sonic is aroace but still loves Shadow with his whole heart and confesses THAT.
