"Getting up morning after bloody morning; if it takes 10,000 tries to master something, that’s the one thing Hob is sure he’s got in the bag, a couple dozen times over.
In everything else, great and small, he dabbles. Printing, trading, sailing, cooking, carpentry, academia. Each new lifetime is a chance to try something new after all, and wasn’t that why he’d told his stranger he wanted to keep going after all this time? To see every speck of newness, oldness, terror, and delight this living business had to offer?"
Hob becomes a jack-of-all-trades, and wishes he could somehow make enough of his life by hand that he could recognize it again, even if his stranger is gone. Then Dream comes back, and they must both reckon with the way they've changed in their time apart, and the desires that time has laid bare.
A mediation on atoms, the concept of mastery, and loving a concept. In which Hob and Dream learn that not everything need be useful to be beautiful, nor perfect to be worth trying.
