Rashid wakes around four in the afternoon, sluggish and tangled naked in the sheets. That isn’t unusual, because even vampires suffer from insomnia—but the fact that he’s alone in bed is. He sits up, casting about in the twisted duvet, and that’s when he hears the next occurrence of the sound that must’ve roused him. Someone is retching violently in the bathroom; it’s a sound he hasn’t heard since college.
Sam is retching violently in the bathroom, Rashid realizes with a stab of panic. He vaults out of bed and stumbles toward the light spilling from the slightly cracked door, his reflexes catching up with his panic-alert mind. He finds Sam huddled on the shower floor in a pile of ruined towels, clearly too unwell to have thought about turning on the water. He’s a mess, coughing up blood so dark it looks black.
“Don’t think fucking it out works,” Sam coughs with a ghastly smile. “You tried.” He wipes his lips on the back of his hand, grimacing at the fresh smear. “Barely had a mouthful of the stuff, so you’d think…” Sam whistles, letting his head drop back against the towels. “Oof.”

Summary
In 1942, the City of New York banned pinball games.
For newly returned WWII veteran (and avid pinball player) Castiel Novak, it's just one more thing that's been taken from him. He finds a place of refuge at the Village Laundromat, an establishment run by best friends Charlie Bradbury and Dean Winchester. The illegal pinball arcade in the laundromat's back room soon becomes a second home for Castiel.
Over the ensuing decades, it also becomes the place where Castiel falls in love, grows old, and witnesses changes he never even dared to imagine.
