She rests it on her lap as she sits next to him. He notices her cheeks are slightly red. “I got you something.”
He raises an eyebrow. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“I wanted to! And you deserve to have more on your birthday. I want it to be a happy day for you. So, um…” She shoves it at him, closing her eyes in nervousness. “Here!”
He laughs as he grabs it, almost falling back on the bed from the present’s size and force of Tohru giving it to him. When he has a good hold on it, he leans in to peck her cheek. “Thanks.”

Kyo pauses, processes the situation, then chuckles and wraps his arms around her in return. “So this is what you wanted?” She presses closer. “I’ll take that as a yes.”

Summary
Leaving the Circus was never truly an option and, infuriatingly enough, Jax had been right.
After the button incident, they fall silent around Caine. They stop playing along. They demand answers instead of distractions. When they attempt to reason with him, it fails. What follows is not an argument, but a punishment.
Caine reveals his truth: time inside the circus moves differently. While they lingered beneath its bright colorful walls, years decayed in the real world. The home they ache for is no longer waiting. It has ended.
To prove it, he builds a new adventure: a simulation of reality. Not the world as it was, but as it has become: fractured, desolate, overrun. They are cast into sprawling ruins, stalked by merciless hunters with familiar eyes and inhuman intent.
For the first time, pain is real. Blood is real. Death is close enough to taste. No cartoon physics, no harmless consequences, and no exit.
They cannot return to the circus until they accept the lesson: eternity with Caine is better than freedom in a dying world.
But survival changes people.

“I just,” Pomni whispered, doing this little slow-blink that drove him nuts right up at him, and his heart clenched. She seemed surprised to admit, “I can’t think of anything to say.”
Jax thought that someone could have driven a train through the place right now and still he wouldn’t have turned away from her. The truth was he didn’t have any ideas himself of what to say, but in disclaiming this herself she hadn’t said anything he needed to respond to, anyway. He could have stayed silent and they both would have been content with that, he thought. But her eyes were so open and honest and there was this squeezing feeling in his chest that felt deeper than a heartbeat, and he heard his own voice pipe up, anyway.
“I …” he whispered. Quietly admitting, “Me, neither.”

Summary
Pomni, despite everything, has settled into a routine amidst the constant daily cacophony and chaos of the digital circus, one she desperately keeps to preserve that fragile, ever-doubtful shred of humanity that still manages to exist within her. She tries to, anyway, even if certain bunny-eared castmates were seemingly determined to do everything in their power to disturb said routine, and make her wonder whether the urge to fight to keep something genuine alive in a fake, plastic world is really worth it after all.
When Caine's newest adventure sends the troupe on a ski resort day trip, she may finally have the opportunity to get some of the answers she's been waiting for. Whether they'll be exactly what she's been hoping for, however, is another question entirely.
Or, the one where Jax and Pomni have another fight, get stuck on a ski lift, and things pretty much spiral from there.

Jax's voice is low again, face turning entirely her way, and she only then notices how close he is to feel his breath against her skin. Hands still far apart.
“You mentioned not liking being forgotten,” he recalls, eyes drifting down to his hands.
She nods. “It hurts.”
“What if that person… the one who forgot you, wanted to forget?”
To be forgotten and afraid is Pomni's greatest fear. Post the events of their ringmaster's death, she seeks out someone who might understand.
