Summary
Ilia kisses him, quiets him. His teeth click against Mikhail’s brace brackets. When they pull away, gasping open-mouthed, he feels guilty. They are born the same year, same age, six months apart, but the braces make Mikhail look childish, naive, hopeful. Ilia wants to bite them, wants to snag his teeth in the wires to feel at least something.
“You wanted this, didn’t you?” he sneers, to smother his own guilt. “Coming to my room just to make yourself feel better.” Mikhail nods quickly, dumbly. His eyes flicker everywhere except to Ilia’s own.

As Cardinal-Deacon, Thomas Lawrence is the papal confessor.
He does not wish for it to be anyone else. This is but one of the reasons he retains his post. He misses the late Holy Father still, but Innocentius XIV is someone he cannot stop himself from serving. He feels, sometimes, as though he has been waiting for this man his whole life. He no longer speaks of resignation, but feels buoyed with spiritual energy, empowered by the Pope’s most divine leadership, by a life full of worship.
It is almost amusing, then, to hear the little sins of the Universal Church’s Supreme Pontiff.
