Wednesday wakes up from being stabbed in the neck with a hypodermic needle, which is a surprise. She has a pounding headache and an issue with focusing her eyes that means it takes her a dangerously long time to figure out what she’s looking at.
“You’re supposed to be in prison,” Wednesday says before her brain can catch up with her mouth and tell it that ‘you’re supposed to be in prison’ is a stupid thing to say to someone who is, evidently, not in prison.
[Wednesday is a semester and a half into her tenure at Nevermore, and people keep trying to kill her. It’s not that she doesn’t appreciate the effort. It’s just that she has better things to do than try to teach people how to do murder properly.]

Summary

Which was to be expected, Beatrice could anticipate longer tousled hair and even newly formed scars that the halo didn't seem to have the sufficiency to heal. (Even though she wanted to step into the portal and take care of whoever had given them, consequences be damned). She didn't expect, however, the large wings sprouting from Ava's back. She couldn't deny - no matter how hard she tried - that they were affecting her.

That rings in the back of Ava’s head when she lies to Beatrice’s face, says "I’m fine," says "I know what I have to do," tells her nothing of what exactly that’ll be.
Warrior Nuns don't survive, Ava knows that much, and even if that's going to be her own fate, too, she’s not going to put that weight on Beatrice’s shoulders. The night after she c'ommunes with Reya and finally understands, she lies and says "Everything’s okay. This is where the Ark is." The next day she lies and says "He split off to find the Ark. Everything's okay." She lies and lies her way to victory, until Beatrice (and Yasmine by proxy) is led safely away from where the real battle will begin.
One of the last things Mary had said to her was, “Trust Beatrice,” but Ava thinks Mary would understand this particular deception.

This book is based loosely on a song with the same name by Gatlin. Season two wrecked me so I did the math to figure out the time difference between Reya’s realm and Earth and I haven’t done math like that since high school, someone please acknowledge my hard work. I only cried once.

Letting Ava go was the hardest thing she’d ever done, and she hated herself every day for not telling her she loved her sooner. Moving back in to their shared apartment was a close second. Ava was everywhere here, she was behind every corner just a breath away. Her dirty clothes were still in the hamper waiting to be washed and her toothbrush was in the cup next to the sink, the apartment showed no sign that Ava wasn’t living there and Beatrice could almost convince herself she was just out for the night. Almost.

Reya had explained how time passed differently here, how days here were just hours back home. Ava thought it was supposed to bring her some comfort, but it didn’t bring any comfort, if anything, it almost made it worse to know that she had spent months here and it had only been days for Beatrice. What if she was gone for years and when she returned it had only been a few months?
