"Huh. Weird," Will says softly to himself when he crouches down and touches the handlebars.
"What's weird?" Mike asks, hoping there isn't a nervous edge to it. But there's a hint of pink on Will's face and he suddenly doesn't seem so eager to meet his eyes, smiling avoidantly.
"I — I — I know where we are," Will's hand comes to the back of his neck, rubbing nervously. He seems upset and surprised in the same breath, "It's just — Vecna's never used this memory of mine before."

Buck is just staring right at him, staring through him. Eddie rolls his eyes, but breaks under pressure, “I’m not upset with you!”
Buck raises his hands at the sudden shift in his tone and Eddie feels utterly betrayed by his own voice.
“Hey, I’m the one who hasn’t had an orgasm in almost five weeks. I think if anyone deserves to be tense —”
Eddie doesn’t really hear the rest.

"That was a nice family meal."
Eddie sees the smile in her eyes, the warmth he remembers every time he'd come to visit that was missing from his parents in El Paso. She'd so easily been able to bring Buck out of his shadowy corner and having Christopher there made it feel like home again too.
"Yeah, it was," he swallows back anything more than agreement, curious if there's more.
"It will be hard to do again with you so far away."

“She came back with a fiancé that you saved for her, a family that she’d found while you were still waiting for her.” Dr. Copeland's statement makes it sound like she doesn’t believe him, incredulous and perhaps that is why she reminds him of the bad that's transpired. To tell him it’s okay to be hurt. But Buck has been hurt plenty times before and after Abby was around. It’s nothing new. And he knows he’s not alone.
“I know,” Buck says, holding a hand up. There’s something he’s just not brave enough to admit yet. “But while I was waiting, I found a family of my own.” And he hopes that it can just mean the 118 and be enough. But he’ll drive it home too. “The 118, I mean.”

“I didn’t want to lie to you.” Will’s voice is quiet and breakable, so different from the defensive, factual tone it should be. He should be meaner. Harsher. Crueler. “I just – I didn’t think it’d matter.”
It feels like Mike’s entire body trembles, shakes like it’s about to burst. “You didn’t think it’d matter if you lied to me?” He hisses, and his voice cracks, just the littlest bit.
Mike Wheeler tries his best to navigate his way through the end of the world, with lots of maybes and misplaced anger.

Summary
“I’m trying not to make it about me.”
The words seem to stop Eddie in his tracks—but only for a fleeting moment. Then, “Okay, then let me.”
Buck blinks, ignoring the feeling of a single tear fighting past the edge of his lashline. Instantly, he swipes it away. “What?”
“Let me make it about you. Talk to me. I want to know what’s going on with you. I’m not gonna be able to focus on this god awful dinner if I’m worried that you’re alone, and upset, and—”
“I miss you,” Buck confesses, abruptly, because anything else he wants to say right now is too raw, too real.
Eddie exhales into the microphone of his phone. “Yeah. Yeah, I—I know. I miss you, too.”
“No, I miss you. More than I’m supposed to, I think.”
“I’m your best friend, bud,” Eddie tells him. “I think you’re supposed to miss me. We’re eight hundred miles apart.”
Miserably, Buck shakes his head. “Not like this.”
Or: Buck finally unpacks and stumbles across a box Eddie left behind, full of sketchbooks that Buck didn’t know he owned. He’s confronted, suddenly, with the fact that his best friend has been drawing him for years.

None of this, of course, has to do with the fact that Will is very, very, very – shirtless.
Will blinks at him. “Are you okay?”
“Shoulders,” Mike says, sounding vaguely chipmunk-like, and he hears Max barely choke down a snicker.
Will comes back for the summer, and Mike deals with it.

“Nancy,” he whines, because how can she be so calm about this? He’s just realized that he might be in love with his best friend, might have been in love with his best friend for a long fucking time.
It takes Will moving away to college for Mike Wheeler to finally, finally realize some things.
All he has to do now is wait for Will to get back.

Summary
“Everything's going to be fine, please don't freak out.” Nancy starts to say, which causes Will’s eyes to widen.
“That’s…not really reassuring, you know that right?”
Nancy huffs a laugh, “Yeah, it isn’t, sorry.” He hears shifting through the receiver, and he thinks maybe that's all she's planned to say.
“Mike’s in the hospital.”
Will sucks in an involuntary breath, letting the air back out, shaky. He nods repetitively, a little numb as he tries to process, before realizing Nancy can’t see him.
“Okay.” He aims for level but his voice cracks mid-way. He’s almost whispering, “Is- he okay?”
Mike's in the hospital, which kickstarts a drive to Boston and a worried Will as he thinks about Mike, the past, and love, all while conveniently held up by New York traffic.
