Summary
Ok, so Castiel's in love with his best friend.
Which is what puts them here, in Dean’s car, eight hours into a nine and a half hour drive up north to bury Castiel’s mother on the grounds that he grew up on. Because it’s been eight years since Castiel cut ties with his family and left, supposedly for college, and there hasn’t been a word of communication since. Because Dean is, at his core, a good person and a better friend, and when he heard that Castiel’s mother had died and that he would need to return to his childhood home over Thanksgiving break, he knew enough to say he’d go with him.
This is, for sure, not helping Castiel get over his inappropriately persistent feelings.

“Jane,” Mary said, stepping in to rescue Dean. “He’s a little shy. Maybe you can convince him tomorrow.”

And Dean’s been getting better at letting go of that Chuck Norris fantasy he had as a kid, uses his spare change to buy silly socks and skinny jeans and his Kiss the Cook! apron, which ain’t stuff his dad would have let him wear in a million years. He cooks dinner and lunch and he’s a neat-freak about his kitchen, and he’s become the kind of guy who nags Jack about wearing a jacket when he goes outside, so maybe he’s not much like what a man ought to be, either.

He was wrong of course, but he stole some film and kept it anyway. It was his own. Pictures he could keep and wouldn't have to leave behind. Pictures of Sam and strange roadsides. Weird alleys covered in flaking graffiti, baked goods on display behind glass. But mostly of Sam.

Dean treats his body as if it is a punishment: for the crime of existing, he must live in a body that he believes will never be his home. Castiel wishes (Cas, it’s Cas now, he thinks, and again feels a peculiar little twinge of satisfaction and longing) that he could make Dean see himself the way he deserves to be seen. You are beautiful, he wants to say. More so than most: body and soul, you create yourself. You are capable of so much, of building a home in your body, but you don’t think you deserve to live in it.
