But Marianne can't ask that of them. Can't ask them to do what she craves. Can't ask them to bury themselves under her skin and take her apart, piece by piece. She can't.
“Um, it's fine,” she says softly. “I can handle it on my own.”
“You don’t have to, though,” Leonie says, enthusiasm making them wave their hands in the air. “Just tell me what you need me to do.”
Perhaps that’s the problem. Marianne has never been good at expressing what she needs. Especially now, when Leonie is looking at her with wide eyes and expressive hands, so kind, so willing. Marianne wants to do all sorts of things to them. Marianne wants them to do all sorts of things to her. But when she tries to say it, the words are blocked by lips that won’t open, by teeth that won’t separate, by a tongue that won’t move.

After the Kingdom's hard-fought, devastating victory over the Empire, their leaders and allies have the last and least glorious mission to carry out: freeing the war-torn continent from its lasting wounds and shackles. “I trust you,” Marianne says, voice not wavering. “You’ll have to, um, help me with my buttons.”
“Right on,” Shez says, reaching behind Marianne to feel the first of many tiny buttons at the nape of her neck. “I got this.”
Shez does not, in fact, got this. Ten minutes later, Marianne’s only half undone, and Shez is struggling with yet another tiny button at the small of her back. Her fingers keep slipping, and Marianne is being ever so patient as she leans over the side of the bed, allowing Shez room to work.
“It should never take this much work to get someone naked,” Shez complains lightheartedly, letting out a hiss of frustrated joy when she gets the next button undone.

Edelgard is so strong, so competent; she’s an emperor, for goddess’s sake—and Bernadetta’s nothing more than just that. She’s just Bernadetta. She’s not enough to fill a consort’s shoes, and certainly not enough to fill an emperor’s bed.
She’d like to be, though. There are times when Edelgard looks at her, or when she strokes her thumb across the back of Bernadetta’s hand, or when she lingers after they kiss, when Bernadetta thinks that she’d like that, too. But Edelgard’s never tried to go further, and the thought of asking for what she wants makes Bernadetta want to curl into a ball and cry. It’s even harder to imagine the rejection should Edelgard not want her in that way.
