It seemed that as each day went by, Hugo just got better and better, more observant, more attentive, sharper. He’d even begun noticing the smaller details about Varian, like the dumb way he talks to his inventions when he’s working on them, and that he is such a deep sleeper, it was almost laughable.
Or that he seemed to think that running his hands through his hair is the equivalent of styling it, and when he does; his hair gets pulled back – even if only for a moment - in way that makes Hugos stomach feel all weird, for whatever reason.
Hugo's just, really good at his job guys, he's so... observant... but only with Varian oddly enough, wonder why.

Ruddiger looked over at the intruder very defensively, irritated at being awoken so abruptly. The sunrise illuminated a golden hue on the trespasser, who finally spoke through his laughter,
"I was wondering how long it would take you to notice me!”
Varian scowled at him before rolling his eyes, not wanting to give him any more satisfaction with his words. The intruder continued "I mean -- I was kinda standing there for quite a while!" he exclaimed, still not able to calm his laughter. Varian sighed, tilting his head to the side so he didn't have to look at the other boys' smug look, before sighing dramatically, then finally replying,
"Hey, Hugo".
Or, a self indulgent What-if AU for if Hugo and Varian met a little bit earlier.
