Derek hesitates to respond, trying to decide on the most concise way to tell the story without his disgust bleeding through. Marie beats him to it.
“After the Argents’ attack, we were the only pack who would give them shelter. As thanks, it was agreed my daughter would marry a member of the Hale pack when she came of age.”
“But Derek is no longer an option because a marriage pact can’t interfere with a pack’s hierarchy,” Lydia fills in, disbelief dripping from every word. “And now every other member of the pack is mated, you’ve finally come calling to sink your claws into Stiles.”

When Derek and Stiles stumbled into a friends with benefits relationship purely by accident, they weren’t expecting it would one day save their asses when a threat from Derek’s past comes knocking. All they need to do is pretend to really be in love to avoid an arranged marriage agreed to years ago with a pact of blood. Considering they hadn’t bothered setting up boundaries when the ‘benefits’ first started, it’s no surprise that the lines begin to blur and Derek’s eyes are eventually opened to a truth he hadn’t been ready to face.

Illya’s question had given him pause. Or perhaps he was distracted by the heat of Illya’s lips, insistent on his neck. After a long time he said, “There’s a series of rigorous and meticulous tests but you’d be surprised, sometimes these fakes can get through even those, and then, you just know because it always comes back to bite you in the ass.”
Illya paused the tape then. He rewound until he caught the museum the American had mentioned working at. He made some notes to himself. Brief, rigorous, meticulous. He hoped he had gotten past any tests.

“Are you with me, cowboy?” Illya asks, and his accent is heavy, thick, but his voice is steady and calm, not betraying any of the shakiness that has Napoleon shivering and twitching as if any second he’s going to come out of his skin.
“Nrgh,” he makes, voice muffled by the pillow, and he is glad, because even he doesn’t know if he meant that to be “yes,” or “no,” or “oh god please.”

“That is a good plan,” Illya admits, as if he can’t quite believe those words just left his mouth directed at that American. He lowers his gun. “I could kiss you, Cowboy.”
And he knows it’s an expression, one he’s not exactly sure how Illya picked up. And he knows the law back home, and what trouble someone like him could get in doing something like this with someone who wasn’t down. But he also knows his own silver tongue, and if he could talk his way out of his own death, Napoleon Solo could talk his way out of this.
“You could, you know.”

Napoleon isn’t quite sure he can put yes, because your superiors don’t get to see you gloating when you’re not playing chess against yourself, and they don’t get to discuss dumb opera plots with you, they don’t get to see you engrossed in cheap paperbacks and treat them like first editions because you care that much about what they say, and they don’t get to see that you have a personality and that it’s everything but unpleasant when one gets to know you, and I don’t understand why would anyone think it’s a good idea to treat you like an asset and not a person in words that might not sound completely ridiculous, never mind that he’s not even sure Illya would take such a rant seriously.
Or: where Illya has issues asking for what he wants if it falls under the unnecessary-to-his-job radar and Napoleon just might be a bit over in his head, but he's entirely willing to rectify that situation.

Illya looks back out over the balcony, across the city to the sea. A few birds wheel overhead. Somewhere a bell starts ringing. “You don’t have to stay. There are worse places.”
“If you are going to die, then I’m not letting you die alone,” Napoleon replies. “Besides, I’m not giving up. Just trying another avenue.” He studies the magic sluggishly curling still around Illya’s body. “Why did you do this?”
“Do what?” Illya asks. His face is pale, even in the bright Mediterranean sun. He tilts his head back and shuts his eyes, turning his face into it.
“Burn the plans. When you knew this might happen.” Illya flinches slightly, and Napoleon hums. “When you knew this would happen. Is this worth dying for?”
Illya flinches again. “No one can have those plans. And I knew it would end like this eventually. This is a better place than I thought I would have.” He breathes steadily, hand clenching into fists as his body spasms. “It was worth it,” he says quietly.
Napoleon whistles. “Christ, Peril. Way to point out that compared to you, I have the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair.”
