“But when did you first kiss?” Luca asks.
“Ah, my sweet innocent rookie. I love that you think this is all we did,” Ilya tells him. Shane hides his face in Ilya’s shoulder. “Your guess was close, Haasy. Shane and I, we met in hotel gym after draft. I gave him some of my water, because I am nice person and he did not bring any. Was very sexually charged.”
“Ilya!” Shane complains, voice muffled by the fact that he’s still hiding in said man’s shoulder.
“What? Is true. But anyway, we first kissed,” Ilya emphasizes the word so that it’s very clear that was not all they did, “summer before our rookie season, after commercial shoot.”
For a moment, there’s silence as everyone does the math and lets that sink in. Then: “2010?!?!?”How the Centaurs find out Shane and Ilya's relationship start date.

Ilya knows, as Shane holds his gaze with stars in his eyes and those beautiful freckles gleaming in the sunlight, that his home will always be right here in front of him.

Back at the cottage after coming clean about their newfound relationship, Shane starts to feel guilty for making Ilya choose between him and the only home he’s ever known. For Ilya, though, it was never really much of a choice at all.

Summary
When he presses the button on the doorbell, he hears the digitally-produced ding-dong echo from inside. There is a tiny box halfway up the adjacent wall that immediately beeps and emits Shane’s voice.
“Hey, you can just leave it on the step, thanks.”
Ilya presses his nose into the digital doorbell, which he knows to also contain a camera, and says, “Shane.”
A pause.
“What the fuck.”
A brief cacophony of noise that Ilya can hear even from outside the house. The multiple successive thumps of something falling, Shane swearing loudly and the sound of what can only be a hockey game being paused on the television.
He opens the door to reveal that he is nap-rumpled, wearing two pairs of socks and carrying a child in his arms. The only really surprising part is that the socks don’t match, though the child is interesting.Ilya takes an impromptu trip to Montreal. There are unforeseen consequences.

Ilya’s feeling a little silly about the thought in and of itself, because everyone owns black t-shirts. This is a perfectly normal, ordinary article of clothing, and there is no reason for Ilya to be so magnetized by it that he is now reaching inside Shane’s suitcase to remove what is a completely innocuous black cotton tee that is clearly something Shane has always owned. The same kind that Ilya also owns, and ‘casually’ tossed at Shane when Shane was lying delectably shirtless in his bed a few months ago that godforsaken day in Boston Ilya can't bring himself to stop thinking about.
Chert, Shane hasn’t just infected Ilya with his boring, his never-ending stream of consciousness mind-babble must be contagious, too.
Ilya picks up the folded shirt and immediately forgets to be concerned about The Hollander Effect on his nervous system, because - yes, that’s definitely the scent of Ilya’s fabric softener lingering on those cotton fibers. He knows that for a fact because he can’t ever find his favorite brand in the US, so he always brings a case from Russia when he returns from a visit.
Okay, so Shane kept Ilya’s shirt.
And neglected to wash it.
That’s hot, right?

But all he could do was brace for impact as he lost control, darkness threatening to take over what was only just the most beautiful mixture of colour. And even as he felt himself losing consciousness, a searing pain in his abdomen, all he could think about - all he could see - was Ilya.
And then Ilya disappeared. Just like that. Shane tried to bring him back, but he couldn’t even do that for himself.
He lost everything. Lost himself. His chest felt like it was caving in. His lungs were burning.
Everything was fading. Just like Ilya had faded.
Everything went black.
OR Ilya calls Shane by his first name for the first time, and Shane freaks the fuck out, because everything is real now. He leaves, unable to process how he's feeling, and crashes, with only Ilya's face flashing before his eyes.

Abruptly, Shane feels pissed off and a little like he’s grasping for something that’s slipping away. He feels the way he did in that bathroom, the first time he had Ilya’s attention for months and didn’t want to let Ilya escape without stealing more of it.
The elevator door opens. Shane does not get off.
Instead, he presses the button for Penthouse 1 and hits send on We didn’t even kiss.
He watches the floor numbers increase as the elevator carries him back to Ilya. Shane has no idea what he’s going to say to the asshole but he knows he has so many words that are about to burst out of his mouth.
Fuck you being the first two.

Realistically, Shane is more than aware he’s being irrational. There’s absolutely no reason for him to be freaking out the way he currently is. Shane is literally his name. All Rozanov did was call him his own name. Rozanov calls him by his name all the time. But it’s always his last. Never just Shane. Even though he’s been called that his whole life, the word feels unbearably intimate, coated in Rozanov’s annoyingly attractive russian accent. And that thought terrifies him.
Or
The tuna melt scene went differently, causing Shane and Ilya to realize their feelings a lot sooner.

When Shane first notices in the locker room showers, he’s having about six different crises at the same time that he’s trying not to get caught looking anywhere near Rozanov’s dick, so it doesn’t really register all the way.
It’s not until he’s watching Rozanov move up the bed that Shane’s eyes snag again on the scars littering his upper thighs and he realises what they are: self-inflicted.
Or: they’re both a little less terrible at having feelings for their rival-with-benefits, Shane grows more comfortable with letting some rules change, and Ilya grows more comfortable with opening up to Shane.
