He sat heavily on the edge of the bed, head in his hands, trying desperately to squeeze these thoughts out of his mind. They’d been nagging at him since the moment they left. But they’d been so scared—sweeping any new room, jumping at sounds, ducking from shadows. And they’d been so busy. They hadn’t had time to think about what running away would mean when they made the decision. Surviving with nothing but each other, even with El’s powers, hadn’t been as easy as he’d thought. Until now, he’d been able to hold the what-ifs, the sadness, the crushing guilt at bay.
(Or, during the final battle, Mike and Eleven choose to escape together and learn that together isn’t just being near each other. It’s a choice they have to make, again and again.)

Summary
Mike has learned about the five stages of grief. He sees all of his friends go through the motions of denial (insisting El somehow must have survived), anger (at Dr. Kay and the military), bargaining (swearing they will do anything for her to return), and depression (lying in bed with the image of her being swept away imprinted in their minds).
But, eventually, for all of them, there is acceptance. The military is gone, convinced that there are no more children with superpowers in Hawkins. El is dead. She made her decision, and she isn’t coming back.
Mike doesn’t know which stage of grief he’s in, but he hasn’t accepted anything.
Or: Mike doesn’t know how to live after El’s death and has no idea how he’s supposed to move on.

Richie tried to look innocent. “Well…so far I totally owned these guys who called you frogface- ow- I kissed your girlfriend, she’s pretty hot by the way- OW- oh I was trying to get into that guy’s pants before you showed up- OW- OW- STOP PULLING MY HAIR!”
“BEEP BEEP, RICHIE. BEEP. BEEP.” Mike fumed, getting Richie in a headlock. Richie struggled for air.
“Um…” The boys paused, turning to look at Mike’s friends.
“What is going on?” Max questioned in disbelief.
OR: Mike's cousin comes to visit for the week, but the two look so similar that no one can tell them apart with a first glance.
Naturally, Richie uses this opportunity to the full extent (and only almost ruins Mike's life completely).

James was holding a struggling Lucas back while Troy had Mike in a headlock, holding his soda over his head.
Dustin paled. “Shit.” He hissed. Will unconsciously moved to hide behind him, as he usually did in the past.
“Who the hell are they?” Max hissed.
“Mouthbreathers.” El stated darkly.
OR: El and Max don't like people bullying their boyfriends, as it turns out.
