Spock has fully recovered from his injury, which caused him only minor brain damage, and is now back to being his usual, highly efficient self on the bridge. So why doesn't Captain Kirk want to include him in the team exploring Aeres II? His help would be invaluable, considering that the civilization on Aeres II is reluctant to integrate with the Federation. And even if the Aeresites are convinced that Spock is their legendary Prince from Afar, it's easier to unravel their ancient mysteries than the incomprehensible ties that bind Spock to Kirk.

“You are a mystery to your friends, Edgin Darvis,” Xenk continued, “and an enigma to your enemies. I do not know why, considering how you wear your heart on your sleeve.”

"Edgin scowled at Xenk, who wrapped his cloak tightly about him with the saintly aura of someone suffering for their righteous deed. He seemed to glisten in the rain, his locs cascading a shower of glittering droplets down the graceful curve of his neck whenever he moved, and he smelled like petrichor. The rest of them stunk pervasively of wet sheep.
“How the fuck are you even doing that? Why aren’t you miserable?” Ed demanded of him.
“I take solace in the presence of my god,” Xenk said beatifically. “And in the boundless infinitude of his love.”
