In the summer between fourth and fifth grade, Robin Buckley, who had a pretty dramatic falling out with her best friend in February and had been lonely since, and who thought the classes she was taking were all for stupid babies anyway, decided that between being the bored kid known for having lost her only friend and being the brainy kid no one knew she’d pick the second any day. She asked her mother, and the elementary school principle, and the middle school principle if she could skip fifth grade. They looked over all her grades, and there was a test, and a lot of conversations between the teachers and parents to ask if she was ready, but ultimately they let her do it. Robin Buckley started sixth grade at the humble age of ten and three quarters years old.

My mom had friends? Sam almost asks before realizing how stupid it would sound. Of course Mary Winchester had friends. She probably had a best friend and another friend she only saw once a year but kept up with over the phone and another friend she went bowling with on Saturdays and another friend who she only hung out with because it was polite. Mary Winchester had friends and hobbies and interests because Mary Winchester used to be a person, not a martyr to avenge or a stick to beat her children with or a ghost who told him she was sorry.
“You and Dean should see them,” Missouri says thoughtfully, squeezing Sam’s fingers one more time before letting go. “You’re Mary’s boys. That should count for something, even if you’re John’s, too.”
(In which Castiel was always a rebel, Mary was never meant to be the perfect wife, and five almost-orphans must pick up the pieces before all Hell breaks loose.)
