Summary
The hunch is back, pulling at Lan Zhan like he’s a frantic fish hooked to a fishing rod. Then the Yiling Patriarch winks. Winks.
The surprise forces Lan Zhan to back away sharply, making his table tremble and nearly spilling his tea. Fortunately, nothing of the sort happened and Lan Zhan didn’t even attract any attention. He rubs his eyes for good measure, thinking that he might be tired despite his flawless sleep schedule, but now the man is closer and a hand comes through the page.
Lan Zhan looks with widened eyes at the drawn hand erupting from the flat surface and waving at him. It’s still sketchy, in black and white, feeling wrong in the 3D environment.
Lan Zhan looks around, but everybody seems too busy to notice the hand growing impatient on the table. Lan Zhan is known to be a reasonable man by his peers, so it’s certainly a blessing that nobody can see him right now.
Lan Zhan takes the hand and feels himself fall.

If he were just like Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng could dismiss the nagging voice in his head that said he’s family, and you have close to nothing left. Jiang Cheng could have left the night hunt with the unanimous truth about Lan Sizhui: he wasn’t his family. He wasn’t like Wei Wuxian, he was moulded and shaped by Lan education to be the same stuffy, emotionless, powerhouse of a teenager Lan Wangji once was. He was just some kid, some future Lan leader, an heir, more Lan Wangji’s than Wei Wuxian’s, whatever the nature of their relationship may be.
But Lan Wangji would not have thrown himself in front of that sword. Lan Wangji would have never bled out on the floor to save Jiang Cheng from the imminent threat of death. Never in a million years would he do something as reckless and self-sacrificial.That was Wei Wuxian, through and through. Lan Sizhui was Wei Wuxian’s son.

He closes his fingers around Lan Zhan’s, slipping their intertwined hands inside the neck of his robes. Pressing Lan Zhan’s palm to his chest, his fingers fanning out around the curve of Wei Wuxian’s ribs. His heartbeat hums against their skin, even and steady, and Lan Zhan exhales softly.
“What did you dream of, then?” he asks.
Mo Xuanyu’s sacrifice was never meant to be a permanent solution, and Lan Wangji fights to do what he could not the last time: to save Wei Wuxian.
