Over a month after driving the suitors from his kingdom, an unexpected visitor comes with a message Khun can't ignore.
"Are you just going to follow me around all night, or are you going to tell me what you're here for?" Aguero called out, tucking a hand in his sleeve.
Silence. He grasped at the hilt of his hidden dagger, keeping his breathing steady.
The scrape of movement against cobblestone rang out, and Aguero pivoted out of the way as a flash of silver flew toward him. Pain seared across his cheek in its wake, the blade clattering against the wall behind him.
"You've gotten slow," a familiar voice followed the blade. "Unless you mean to tell me that you let me hit you on purpose."

Bam hardly set foot on the first step before a voice rang out, low and calm but with an edge of suspicion. "Who's up there?"
He hesitated. Though he knew that he had to kill whoever was down there, it seemed cruel to do so without even giving him a chance. "I think I'm here to kill you?"
What do you think you're doing? Rachel demanded.
Silence, then laughter came echoing up the stairs. "You must be the worst assassin I've ever heard of, announcing your intentions like that. Come on down, then, and give it a try."
I guess we won't get a better invitation than that, the other voice inside him muttered, his unease clear. Let's go.
Bam made his way down, his footsteps silent against the stone through no effort of his own. He came out in a shadowed room, the moon through the window illuminating a graceful figure seated against the wall. In its silvery light, the figure's light blue hair almost seemed to glow, framing his face like a halo. Cobalt eyes stared back at him, tired but bright with curiosity.

"We can still get out of here, Khun. While everyone's distracted with the celebration, we'll sneak onto a ship out of here. We might not be able to rely on any of the Great Families, but you have a brother in Wolhaiksong, don't you? Maybe they'd give us sanctuary."
It was a sound plan, risky but achievable. Except Aguero had the sense that now that Bellerire had won, he wouldn't be quite so willing to give up the thing that gave him the most claim to the kingdom's throne. There was no guarantee that he wouldn't chase him wherever he went, and if Wolhaiksong wouldn't give them sanctuary, then they would never be safe.
Besides, what would become of Bam's kingdom if Aguero left it under Bellerire's command? When Aguero had married Bam, he promised to take care of Bam's kingdom and people as his own. He'd failed to protect Bam; he couldn't break this promise to him now that it was the last thing he had of his husband.
"No," Aguero said. "I'm not abandoning Bam's kingdom."

Kiseia's brother is dead. He dared to stand up to their father, and he paid the price for it. The least she can do is give him the proper funeral rites. But when she goes to retrieve him, she finds that he's not nearly as dead as she assumed.
Khun is dead. That's what the voice that answers Khun's pocket tells him, but Bam can't believe it. In all the years climbing the tower, Khun has never stayed down. No matter what, Bam is going to get him back.
When she reached Aguero, his eyes were shut as if in sleep, a smile on his face. Kiseia stopped, unable to tear her eyes away from that smile. What had he thought about in his last moments, to look more content than she had ever seen him in life?
She shoved those thoughts aside, even as something painful twisted in her stomach. There was no time for questions, not when she had to get him out of there before someone else came for him.
Shinsu flared, and she scrambled back out of the way as her brother's corpse was wreathed in flames of orange, red, and blue.

In the aftermath of the 73rd floor test, Khun has been left adrift without any memories but Bam's name and his role as Bam's light bearer. Now, he must rediscover his place on a team he does not know, all while trying to regain his memories and plan for the 74th floor.
"Stupid gator," Khun muttered against the inexplicably familiar fondness warming his chest. If this was what it was like being on a team with Bam, no wonder he'd felt so driven by the need to reunite with him.
Rak pointed an accusatory claw at him even as Bam stood with Rak still wrapped tightly in his grip. "You need to respect your great leader, Blue Turtle!"
"I don't see a great leader," Khun shot back, the words slipping from his mouth without thought. "I see someone's miniature pet alligator."
"Why, you—!"
(This fic will not make any sense without reading the first installment, so please check that out first! Though the first is definitely a lot heavier, so keep that in mind. I intend to take a lighter tone in this fic but it'll still be angsty in parts.)

"I don't get visitors," the voice replied, tired and heavy with suspicion.
Aguero took the last few steps, coming out in a rounded cavern, with only a single opening in the ceiling for moonlight to enter. At the back wall of the cave, a black-clad figure sat with his wrist chained to the wall, head bowed and long brown hair pooling on the cave floor. Golden eyes shone out at him from under the fringe of his bangs, some kind of resignation in them. No matter how closely Aguero looked, he could see no monstrous qualities.
He looks lonely, his own voice told him, something sorrowful in it. Like he holds the weight of the world with no one to help him bear it.
He looks dangerous, Mother corrected. You mustn't listen to that fool. Kill him.

However, when he arrives, he finds his home overrun by suitors who covet his husband and throne, and finds himself caught up in his husband's scheme to get rid of them.
Hwaryun approached them. "It appears our host is here to greet us personally," she said with an enigmatic smile.
Bam's head whipped around, his gaze falling first on the towering figure of Rak, then the man walking beside him. Even as far away as he was, the distinct light blue of his hair made his identity clear.
Aguero was as beautiful as the day Bam had lost him, carrying himself with all the poise of a ruler. It was strange to see him with long hair, the culmination of years of grief, but at the same time, it lit something like hope in Bam's chest.

Summary
(this is an alternate timeline of the other fics in the series; i absolutely recommend reading those first)
Khun has been fending off the advances of his suitors for years, waiting patiently for Bam's return. The situation changes when his suitors dare to threaten his son, and Khun is forced to take action.
It was time for all of that to end. Power coursed through his veins as he stalked his next victim, the man's heavy breaths echoing off the walls.
With barely a thought from him, the fire fish heeded his will, swirling through the air and drawing the fire from the torches into itself. It dived back into his chest, but even the sear of its flames couldn't melt away the numbness in his limbs.
The man gasped as the hallway went dark. Aguero didn't need light to finish the job, slamming the base of his spear into the ground. Cold rippled through his body, and a breath later he was met with the wet sound of ice tearing through flesh, an anguished scream ringing through the hall.
He twisted the spear and shinsu flowed through it again. The scream cut off with a gurgling death rattle.

Summary

After Bam is captured by Khun Edahn, Khun infiltrates one of his father's events to convince him to let Bam go. In the process, he finds himself as the night's entertainment, put into the conversational arena with five other Khun family members to petition for Bam's freedom.
Before Aguero could say a word, Asensio leaned over to whisper something in Edahn's ear, and Edahn's face cleared.
"Ah, the one who stole from my treasure room." He turned his gaze back to Aguero. "You know, I should probably kill you for that."
"Probably," Aguero replied.
"You know that, but you came back. Why?"
"I want you to release Bam."
Edahn squinted at him again. "Who?"
"The Irregular," Asensio said, the original interest he'd shown at Aguero's interruption having faded into boredom.
"I see." Edahn finally straightened up, turning his full attention onto Aguero. "You were one of his companions, then? I suppose out of respect for how far you've managed to come, I can hear you out before killing you."

The man— or spirit, if Goseng was right, and Viole was inclined to believe it given his otherworldly beauty— clicked his tongue, then his head raised and Viole was pinned in place by the most striking cobalt eyes he'd ever seen. There was something familiar in those eyes, something that called to Viole the same way that the pieces of himself called to him.
Irritation flashed across the spirit's face, and that sensation of comfort fled.
"Rak, you stupid gator, you're supposed to eat intruders, not lead them to me," the spirit called as he rose to his feet.
