It makes Jeongin laugh, and Seungmin can’t help but smile at it, “Your first time on a Wednesday night? Why not come to a Sunday service?”
“I’m not really religious, to be honest.”
“So why come to Church at all?”
Seungmin considers the question. “I don’t really know. I just kind of… ended up here.”

Rantaro blinks as green eyes meet gold, both sets of them confused but somehow okay with each other as their hands instinctively wrap around one another.
“I’ve met you before,” Rantaro thinks out loud as the color blue overwhelms him, calming and serene. It’s not blue like a clear sky, but blue like the ocean at nighttime, and if he stares long enough Rantaro feels like he is swimming.
The other boy strengthens his grip on Rantaro’s hand, and he is suddenly overly aware of how warm the other boy’s hand is. It travels from his palm to the core of his heart, and for a moment Rantaro swears that he is on fire.
“I know,” the other says, and Rantaro feels like he has heard that voice before, somewhere, sometime ago. Maybe it was days, maybe it was centuries, but he knows he’s felt this warmth and heard that voice before.

The thermostat in the back of the classroom always displayed 55 degrees no matter the weather, leaving the students to shake ever so slightly when the leaves began turning orange and the heat from the hallway windows could no longer neutralize the cold of the science room. Science class, economics project, a chilly October morning of the last year of high school. A new relationship blooms. Very slowly.
I thought the amasai tag needed a slow burn in line with the canon story of Rantaro's missing sisters and Shuichi's promise to help him. So I wrote one.

“I’m glad you made it out okay,” Rantaro says halfheartedly, unsure where the conversation is going. Truthfully, he’s not sure he wants it to go anywhere at all.
Kokichi blinks, and Rantaro notices. There is something missing. Something is not quite there.
“Yeah,” he responds shortly, his eyes fixed in a direction that gears more towards Rantaro’s shoes than his face. They are flat, emotionless, like one of Angie’s blank notebook pages before she fills it with color (or rather, her programmed persona would). He expects Kokichi to elaborate, to say more, but he is met with a stark uncharacteristic silence that he quickly understands is here to stay.
Rantaro stares, trying to fill the space in front of his eyes, and Kokichi does not meet them.
Something is missing.
Something, he realizes over and over again, is not quite there.

Rantaro wakes up. As soon as he can, he leaves the recovery facility before the others do.
But recovery is hard.

“Hey Peko!”
The swordswoman looked up from her homework to see a tall, green haired figure walking towards her across the dining hall. His mossy hair looked messy, as though he had been running his hands through it for a while. A black phone lay clutched in his left hand, and he had the corners of his mouth curled upwards in an easygoing half smile.
Peko was not usually one to break out into a smile, being the deeply stoic person that she was. However, when she caught the rare glimpse of a certain friendly face, she felt a lighthearted grin—one that was only ever reserved for this specific person—sneak its way onto her usually impassive features.
“Hello, Rantaro!”

Peko learns about what it means to smile. Rantaro learns to let his guard down a little. They both try to figure out how to feel vulnerable again.
