It was a middle-aged man on the other side of the doors. His back was mostly turned to Fabian. He had his phone pressed up against his ear.
"What? No. He probably got traded again." The man laughed, listening for a moment. "Maybe he had another breakdown. Freak."
There was... a moment that Fabian was missing. A stretch of several seconds that was just gone. First he was rinsing out brushes, then he was over there, his hands still damp, heartbeat loud in his ears.
"Hey," Fabian said. "Shut the fuck up."Or: Who said only hockey players can throw hands? And no, in retrospect, Fabian isn't proud of it.

He picked up. For a second he considered saying, 'privet,' but then settled for, "Hello?"
"Mr. Shane Hollander?"
It was a male voice, with a thick Russian accent. His H was as rough as Ilya's had been when they'd first met. "Yes," Shane said. "Um... da. Kto govorit'?" He over-compensated, making an odd 'tshhh' sound at the end.
The man continued in English, undeterred by Shane's fumbling attempt at Russian. "You are friend of Ilya Grigoryevich Rozanov?"
A foreboding chill raced over his skin at Ilya's full name. It doesn't mean anything, he chided himself. It was just politeness. Formality.
"Yeah," Shane said. 'Friend,' indeed. "What's going on?"
"I'm sorry to disturb you." The man paused for a moment, solemn. "I call from hospital. Mr. Rozanov is very sick."
The bottom fell out of Shane's stomach. He was glad both of his feet were on the floor.
"What?"
In which, cut off from his brother, Alexei Rozanov tries another avenue to get money.

Gurathin flinched. I hadn't realized how absorbed he'd grown by his little ritual. He glanced into the mirror towards me. His eyebrows raised, but then he politely looked away again.
"It's not good for the skin to leave it overnight."
Humans. So fragile. "But you have to put it back on every morning," I pointed out. "That seems like a hassle."
Gurathin was dabbing carefully at his other eye. Perhaps it was more sensitive. From a MedSys file that I'd definitely not downloaded illegally, I knew that that side of his head held more augments than the other, especially behind his eye socket.
"Leaving it on too long gives you wrinkles," he said.
"You already have wrinkles."

In late 2012 when Shane has a meltdown and frantically tells them to call Lily, for the first time Yuna’s ever witnessed, Shane is coaxed out of one of them instead of just suffering through until the exhaustion wins out instead—and all by some mysterious, apparently very well attuned to Shane, 'Lily'.
She hadn’t meant to see the number before she’d pressed it and fumbled the phone up to Shane’s ear. It was simply a byproduct of the situation, something Shane had asked for her to do.
…Memorizing it and then texting that number to thank Lily for their help was not something she’d been asked to do. But she worries so much about Shane, and Lily is a reassurance. Not a pry for details but the simple, verifiable confirmation: he’s okay.
Lily, on the other hand, very much enjoys being able to make oddly specific 'your mother' jokes to Shane much more often now. (And maybe the whole family piece of it, too.)

Dallas Kent’s teammate makes a bigoted assumption. A very loud, very incorrect assumption. Twitter eats him alive.
Because, yes, Rozanov has slept with a lot of women and they have a lot to say. About consent and check-ins and that accent.

Summary
Shane doesn’t respond right away, he just looks at him for a moment longer, before he nods back, mouth curving into a faint smile. A sad smile that Ilya didn’t expect.
He breaks the eye contract, turning his face to the side as he starts blinking hard, like he’s trying to force something back.
And oh.
Ilya’s chest constricts sharply when he realises what the other’s doing.
Shane is doing it again. Hiding his feelings before they can spill over. Stopping himself from crying. It’s an odd habit Ilya has noticed from the very beginning, the fact that Shane never truly lets his tears fall. Doesn’t matter how heavy the shine around his eyes becomes, they’re always swallowed back inside.
