As if scalded by a hot iron, Aldo flinches at the words thrown so casually. It is the late 1970s. Aldo is still a lanky limbed teenager with a full head of hair.
In his blurred vision, he can make out only the dark silhouette of a boy—the boy stands against the searing sunlight of an early summer day, looking down at him with a head cocked to the side.
This is a story about memory.

Vincent drew a single nail point along the underside of Aldo’s jaw, admiring the faint red line that appeared in its wake. Then he lifted his finger and wrapped his hand around Aldo’s throat instead, tight enough to cut off his breathing.
“But if you’ll do it for him, why not me, hmm?” Vincent asked, leaning down to whisper in his ear. “Why shouldn’t I get to torture you a little, too?”
