There’s a heavy, dragging sort of shuffle in the hallway.
“...memory features prominently throughout the piece, almost a character in its own right…”
More shuffling. A bump. Oh, what fresh hell…?
“...will you be exploring more of your own layer of the story in the sequel?”
The door to the parlour opens, and Armand comes in, absolutely smeared with blood and dragging a dead body.
“Uhhh… uh, um, there— there was a glitch, can you repeat that last bit?”
Armand drags the body right to the centre of the room, then straightens up, shaking that ridiculously beautiful hair off his face. “Just for a moment,” he half-says, half-mouths behind Daniel’s laptop. “Don’t mind me.”
“...if you’re going to more prominently feature the fourth layer of the story — that is, your own — in the sequel.”
For a second, Daniel wonders what he’s done in his life to deserve this, but then his brain helpfully unfurls a laundry list at least six miles long.
Or: doing interviews from home is difficult when one has an Armand.

A kid, in his 20s. Black tousled curls, green eyes. His cheeks are round, some baby fat still clinging to him, but it’s offset by the strong line of his jaw and a square chin. Frank’s knife aches in his pocket; he wants to flick it open, press the tip of it into those cheeks, first one, then the other. Watch the flesh dip, then split and part for the blade. He wants to carve that face.
“I’m headed for Nevada,” he says. “Any bit could help.”
“Hey, it’s your lucky day!” the kid says with a broad grin that stretches his plush cupid lips really far. “Hop in!”
Frank climbs into the back seat, slips off his backpack.
“Thank you boys so much,” he says, extends a hand. “My name’s Frank.”
The kid on the passenger side shakes it, easy and firm.
“I’m Daniel, this is Armand.”
Or: it's 1979, two maniacs are in love, and serial killers make for good lunch.

“I mean… it’s really not.”
“Blood poisoning is, in fact, extremely serious, beloved. Now please, tell me, which of these should you take?”
“Uh, these are all pretty strong, I don’t need any of these.”
“Yes, you do.”
“It’s not healthy to take antibiotics for no reason!”
Looks like Armand will have to crush the pills into his food.

He holds his leather jacket open for a photo, and yup, the shirt says EAT THE RICH in red, slightly shimmering letters. Cute.
“Nice.” The pap snaps some pics. “So how does that square with your billionaire — sorry, multi-millionaire — boytoy over there?”
“One, I’m the boytoy here, and two, you should have seen what I did to him earlier today.”
Okay, Lauren’s not hungry any more. Jesus Christ, Dad.

One of those 24-hour joints, with stacks of extra-large machines with chipped white paint, benches polished by millions of asscheeks, and an obligatory flickering fluorescent bulb. A classic. Brings back memories of getting kicked out of the house by a soon-to-be ex-wife. Twice.
“Okay?” Daniel says, after a moment passes and Armand is still glued to the window, staring with those big lemur eyes of his.
“Let’s go inside.”
See, Daniel should have known he didn’t just mean inside the building.
Or: Armand discovers a laundromat and decides to have a spa day; Daniel almost manages not to get in trouble.

There! Right there, a tall figure, the only one that’s standing still in this jumping, swaying crowd, the only one who doesn’t get jostled or bumped. Dark clothes, dark hair, those beady orange eyes.
Everything inside Daniel sings in recognition, and he starts forward, which is when Armand turns away, slipping in the direction of the exit, and fuck that!
Daniel lunges between the crush of bodies, reaches out, hooks his fingers in the back of Armand’s belt. Armand turns around, hair flying, wide-eyed, startled; Daniel isn’t buying any of it for a second.
“You said you did want me,” Daniel says over the roar and pulse of the stage; his fingers are still anchored behind that belt, but slipping, as Armand turns towards him.
“Yes. Very much.”
He says it so sadly and so coolly at the same time. He’s doing that uber-composed thing, where he’s lacquered over with varnish and polish and glass. Vibrant and vivid and fucking fascinating but… untouchable. Unreachable. Unknown.
Or: 5 times Daniel couldn't catch Armand, post-turning, +1 (so many) time(s) he did.

“I’ll get back to you with the precise badness evaluation when I’ve finished analysing it,” Armand huffs, throwing the covers over himself and sliding lower, until all that’s left is a mop of dark curls peeking out.
“I’m sure you will. I love you, you freak.”
“I love you too.”
Or: due to a scheduling conflict, Daniel and Armand have to spend a few weeks apart, and they both proceed to be Completely Normal about it.

Sitting back, Jamie brushed a stray thread of cotton wool away from the wound. Ben glowered back at him, rolling the corner of his lip in to nip experimentally at the spot. “Why’d ye do it, anyway?”
Shuffling against the bench, Ben sank his teeth a little further into his lip. A drop of blood beaded from the split, and he hissed, his grip on the spot springing loose. “I couldn’t just let them talk about you like that, could I?” he retorted, like he thought it should be obvious. In the same voice he’d used when he realised Jamie didn’t understand cars, or telephones, or food in wee metal cans.
Like it was obvious that he’d throw a punch at someone who insulted Jamie.
“Wh-” He was staring, Jamie realised. Frowning, he turned his eyes down to the cotton wool in his hand, crumpling it in his fist. “Why does it matter to ye?”
When Ben gets into a fight on Jamie's behalf, Jamie can't imagine why he bothered - and they end up discovering they have more in common than they first thought.
